3's a crowd in my flock - would more birds help?

Realizing that this is probably a silly question, you folks are the only ones who won't laugh at me so I'm going to ask anyway.
My "flock" consists of 3 silkies - 2 hens and one rooster. The rooster seems to have married one of the hens - he breeds only her, herds her away from the other hen, and at night, he snuggles up with her in the corner and the other girl sleeps alone.
I'm thinking I should find a couple more silkie hens to keep the poor third wheel company - do you think they would hang together? The 3 I have now are all black - if I got a different color, would they shun the black loner? Should I get one or two or three more for the best chance of them joining the lonely girl? I feel so bad for her!

Hi chickiebird...and welcome. I think you came to the right place. I would get a few more...Is your coop big enough to handle a few more? I would at least get...ohhhhh....as many as your coop can hold, and you can financially afford! LOL ( we are a bunch of enablers here, so I dont think anyone would talk you out of getting more) Sounds like your hen needs a friend....or 2...or 3...or 4...LOL

I have been told that color minority could be a problem but it hasn't been with my flock. All are red or red/brown except one black Australorp. She's actually the dominant hen. However, they've been raised together as chicks. I would maybe try to get at least one of the same color as the outcast hen to be on the safe side. Also if you can get chickens the same age that would be better, because if you get chicks and raise them separately until they can be put with your current chickens, the chicks will have bonded, leaving the Silkie hen the odd one out again. Perhaps try getting even just one chicken--especially if space is a concern-- of the same age so it will be forced to buddy up with the lone Silkie hen.
