4 dead babies what killed them??UPDATE More babies gone!! HELP

I don't have any experience with cocci. You might want to start a new post asking. There is nothing you could of done to prevent this, they need medicated feed to begin with due to it being everywhere! I hope there are survivors in the end. I hope your neighbor feeds medicated feed after this, it's got to be cheaper then the bird meat stuff. Good luck until she gets back.

Babies seem better tonight.... gave them the corid and some naturewise extra probio feed, and some baby vitamins
heres the babies cage

You are doing so much for these birds, more than their owner is able or willing to do. Don't blame yourself for the losses, that is on the owner. 50lbs of feed for 2 weeks for that many birds?? No way. Little wonder she has such high morbidity, they are malnourished. If she is your friend, sit down with her when she gets back and gently explain what went wrong and why. And no, those kinds of losses are not normal. Maybe the light bulb will turn on, maybe it won't, but you've done your best.

I'll toss my 2cents in here. Find some information on abusive relationship counseling for her too. As her friend she needs to hear this and have somebody let her know it is OK to leave and deal with her bigger issues of insecurity! As much as you may hate to hear it, you are enabling her to continue this behavior by not saying anything and for not making a stink.

This kind of crap makes me sick........ I would be the one to have all of those mistreated animals 'suddenly' disappear.

I apologize if I am harsh, but I have had to watch my neighbors starve their dogs to death for YEARS and nothing is done by the cops about it.......... and I have had the friend with the emotionally abusive hubby as well. Too much drama for me since you cannot fix everyone; I do not need any additional soap operas in my life!

I can offer some advice ...Tell her to quit raising birds or you'll have the law on her sorry butt!!

It's just sick the way that woman is raising birds! There's absolutely *NO* excuse for it! If she can't do things properly because of lack of funds - *DON'T DO IT AT ALL!!*. Pretty darn simple! I don't give a rats butt how long sahe's been raising anything! Apparently she's been doing it all wrong and very badly for all those years!!

Get mad and tell her! You're not in the wrong when you see something like that and say something about it!

What happened to the backbones of people anymore/! Everyone's too afraid to say something when they see and *KNOW* that a situation is just plain wrong. Used to be if I screwed up at my friends house, his mom would paddle my butt and by the time I got home, she'd already let my mom or dad know about it and I got it *again* for behaving badly at a friends house! This is the same principle.

I am sorry that I didnt read this until now ghost...we were so close at the bash. Agreed that the chicks should have had more and better food but if she has ones that are out and free ranging with mamas they will be much smaller than yours in a brooder. Case in point; I had a hen hatch 12 guinea eggs. Since I know how hard it is for a mama to keep track of guinea babies I tood 6 inside to the brooder and left her with 6, Comparing the babies this week at week two I would say that the inside ones are easily triple the size of the freerangers! And she only has 2 left...I still have 6 inside. So that could be some of the reason for size--they catch up eventually...just slow to grow. ALso regarding her full sized chickens; that hen looks just like some of mine. Half Polish or something. THey are the best broodies but are pretty little--I call them 3/4 size chickens. I have a bunch!
It is too bad that you had to fall into the trap of watching animals when owners are off on vacation...at least it's not winter! I watched someones critters and he ran out of propane for the house! Pipes were freezing, animals were dying and he was in Florida! Nope--never again!
Do try to get her some help as BL4 says...maybe you can slip her the number for PADA. Just tell her to look anyway...Terri O
