i have just built a coop that is really more of a garden shed, it is 15 by 12 ft and 8 ft high with a window on each side and one end opens to a 15 by 12 ft fenced and roofed outdoor area.
. ,,the roof is a standard A frame stick built roof and there is space between the tops of the walls and under the roof eaves about 4 inches plenty for animals to get thru if they really want to but they'd have to climb the house to do so, or drop on the roof from a tree which is possible.

it is great for ventilation but should i try to hardware cloth or wire the gap somehow ? is that necessary?
i have no chickens yet just finished the exterior and am now working on the feeders, perches, and poop boards etc.

I would use hardware cloth. You keep the ventilation with safety against predators.

you are prepared before the chickens arrived, wow thats new. thought we all got birds then scrambled to put something up. I would just to be safe, i left 2 inches and was asking if it was ok but 4 could cause a pretty good draft, or let wx in or worst a predator. cloth is a bit expensive, although u only need 6 inch strips so i guess get a roll and cut it to size.

Just about anything can get through a 4 inch gap...although great for ventilation, I would hardware cloth the entire gap.
