I got six chicks (all supposed to be female) hatched at the end of June. So far no crowing or anything, but the tail feathers on this EE have me worried. Can anyone ease my mind? Or do I definitely have a roo on my hands?

From what I understand, all black and white EE males have red on their wings. Also, that tail is starting to look rooster-ish (pointy, draping saddle feathers.) They are only four months old? He should start crowing at 5-6 months.
EDIT: Now that I see the new picture, definitely a cockerel!

I hate to disappoint you, but that's definitely a roo. A hen just wouldn't have a tail like that. Plus, he's got pointy hackle and saddle feathers.

Now that we've established that "Beauty" (named by my 6yo) is a boy, comes the fun of figuring out what to do with him. I absolutely cannot keep a rooster in my neighborhood. I'm assuming that the prospects of finding him a new home are low, but if anyone has suggestions I'd be grateful!

Otherwise, is there a good way of finding people who would want a cockerel for meat? I'd rather not just kill him and bury him in the yard, but I can't feed him to my kids - he's been their pet since he was just a fluffy little thing.
