The spot thing only works for baby chicks. The comb makes me think male.

What other signs should I look for to tell the difference, and how soon? I can't have a rooster, so if she is a he I need to find a new home for Pippin, but I don't want to do it too soon and be mistaken. There is no difference in leg color between Pippin and the other Barred Rock I have, both have dark fronts. Pippin has a bit more white in the feathers, but the rest is black, not grey.
This leaves a real dilemma, do I settle for only 3 chickens instead of my planned 4? Do I go get another BR on May 2nd when they get a delivery? How do I raise 1 single BR when the other chicks will be 5-6 weeks old? My luck, I'll get one more and it will turn out Pippin is a girl who grew her comb a bit early then I'll have 5 chickens in a coop built for 4. Aaaaaaah! Advice needed!
Do you need more/better pictures? Doesn't anyone see a pullet in those pics? (why, yes, I am sounding desperate, thanks.)

I would consider starting to find him a new home now. No more pictures needed... His legs are very thick, comb large and red already. No doubt boy.

Grrr. It's so hard when you can get such varying opinions. I saw someone else's page that said her barred rock was overwhelmingly voted roo, but now that he's laying eggs she's pretty sure it's a girl. I've also read that boys have all yellow legs and Pippin has dark legs like our other BR. Maybe some other signs will start to appear on her soon. I really, really want her to be a her.

I picked up 2 BR chicks from the "pullet" bin at TSC--now at about 5 weeks old, I can tell that I have one boy and one girl. The girl is much darker, not a lot of white barring at all, and not so red on the face. And both had dark legs when they were young, but now the rooster has a more yellow leg color. The boy has a lot of white.

Random comment--I love when the little roo's start growing their cute little wattles! I can see them in the pic where your chick is looking up at the camera.

Definitely roo. We got "sexes pullets" last year from mypetchicken and our barred rock roo started out just like that. We held onto hope for him being a girl...but he was definitely a roo. Lol
The old saying goes: black with white stripes, hen. white with black stripes, roo.
And sorry to say, that little roo is white with black stripes and a big pink comb already lol
