4 week old chick has a cyst or something

Hi Folks,

I have a 4 week old Black Star. She has not been pecked on (I'm pretty sure) and I just noticed there is a bald area at the base of her neck. There is also what looks like a fluid filled sack. I cannot imagine what this is. It does not look like a a follicle cyst.

Any ideas? Advice?

Check to see if it is her crop.

In baby chicks the crop can be around to the side. That is where the food and water is stored until it moves on to the gizzard and intestines.

The crop fills up as they eat and drink, and then goes down some, and then they eat more. Is the chick pooping okay?

Wow! I have been raising chicks for 13 years and have never seen that! It's still dark out, but I'll check on her a little later to see how it's changed. That link was super helpful, I'm sure it's her crop now.

She seems to be pooping fine.
