I got a mix barred rock rhode island red yesterday and I think it may be a rooster. reasons why I think it may be a roo
it is real squawky when I hold it.
it stands up tall.
its comb is a redish color already its hatch mates comb isn't
its legs are real thick and orange and its hatch mates are thinner and more of a grey.

good point. I will for sure update. My youngest son picked this one out of the cage of "pullets" at the farm. he has named her Nugget... LOL I think he will be sad if we have to return said Nugget because she is a he LOL

awww i kinda know the feeling...my son (4) lost his cockerel, oatmeal, to some neighboring dogs (they let their dogs run loose) and that was about 2-3 months ago and my baby still ask if he's coming back or if hes staying gone

on the other hand im about to shoot me some dogs that keep going after my live stock (thats completely legal and im an animal lover but these dogs are outta control and as much as i wouldnt want to i do need to protect my livestock (over $300 worth in chickens like 40 chickens and 16 ducks and 3 rabbits) and my sisters show these birds at the fair and when my kids get into 4-h they will show them)

I have a 4 year old son too and he picked out a chick for him self too

He named her Princess... He would be DEVASTATED if anything happened to ANY of the chicks. he LOVES them so much. he sits for hours just watching them. It is raining outside right now.... He is sitting in the rain watching them. LOL

Princess is the hatch mate I talked about she looks more she to me

excuse her nasty feet. She walked in her water then in her food.... She has what I call corn cake feet LOL

:::UPDATE:::

A rooster like I suspected.

He started sounding a bit different than the others. his voice started to get a bit raspy. he started to make what sounded like attempts to crow. then he got some tail feather that I knew right away were roster feather.

This is the hen we got. She is for sure a hen and has already started to lay eggs. She has no tail feathers right now because the roosters at the farm we got her from have pulled them all out. My son picked her out as a replacement for Nugget and he has named her Tender.
