450 to lose jobs

Too bad the math and science departments will probably lose teachers instead of coaches. A lot of schools now would rather have 1 in a hundred become professional athletes than 100 math or science majors.

My best friend is in this same position. The university eliminated her position right after she spent an entire semester re modeling and designing a new book arts studio, she hauled at her own expense her VERY heavy letter press from upstate Michigan to Tennessee and installed it in the studio. I just do not know how these universities sleep at night. Tuition is going up and perfectly good buildings are constantly being torn down and re built and in the midst of all of this they cut teachers, the whole reason for going to college. It makes me sick!

I heard on Money Marketplace on NPR that there are many universities eliminating entire sports and the staff with them. I was shocked to hear that because I never thought a university would do that.

Yeah, our science building should be condemned it's so bad. They have finally gotten approval from the state to build a new one. Of course there is no money for it. Interestingly enough we just build a brand spankin' new baseball field (multi kajillions of dollars) and the football stadium got a $1 million scoreboard. They say it's from different money, but when push comes to shove, the money pile is the same.
A coworker has a theory that says that for every dollar a school spends on athletics, two dollars should be spent on academics. Conversely for every dollar (or job position) cut from academics, TWO should be cut from athletics. Makes sense to me if we are truly academic institutions. Sadly, that's not at all how the world works.
It stinks.
