4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

Maybe if you have an electric timer that you could plug your incubator into, you could have it start on time?  Or would you be allowed to start it 30 minutes early to give the incubator and eggs time to warm up to proper temperature?

I don't see any problem with that. The main reason for the time to set is for the first chick out after midnight contest. If you don't want to be part of that contest then you can set whenever.

Remember to post a picture of your set eggs so we can verify for the hatch rate contests.

Evening all, spent the day driving to TSC to get cattle panels, then to lowes for my field fencing (gotta love a military discount there) and unails and oh my the list was long. Gotta get to building the hoop coops though with all of this hatching we have ahead.

Muscovy eggs are growing, goose eggs are set. Collecting duck eggs daily to set this week and lined up a ton of our own eggs and shipped eggs for chickens.

HOOP Coops?! Do tell! Do you have pictures?

LOL I bet you could get away for at least 2.5 months before the "exotic chicken" finally gave up the goods and gave away it's true breed! GOBBLE

Then act all surprised and say "oh my how did that happen"

Sounds like maybe you've done this before....just sayin.

I have Silkie eggs if anyone is interested. PM me. White rooster over white & black hens. Pics. in profile.

Just hatched last week. I am getting more white then black.

Quote: well theres good news. I will be able to hatch their eggs! Unless somebody new decides to spring it on me. Since I saw it early enough and separated quickly, only four got it. all the other 54 are okay. the four that got it are doing so good!!! three are pretty much all fine so I will have to wait awhile to make sure they dont carry it over to the flock and the other one is still crusty but is doing so much better

I didnt lose any to this which i am excited about

Im not sure. still looking into how long a bird is a carrier for it. two weeks ago we got 17 new chickens but everybody looked healthy.

Hey guys!

How long does it take for chickens to begin laying again with added light to legthen their days. It's getting absolutely rediculous... 20 hens and I honestly haven't seen an egg in 4 weeks. One is molting and one is coming out of a molt but the other 18 have no excuse. So, if I added light just temporarily, like for the next 2 weeks, would they begin laying eggs in time for the hatch along? I know every chicken is different, but just a ball park guess would be nice because I won't do it unless I will most likely get eggs for the hatch along.

Thanks!
It took mine about 1 1/2 weeks, but you have to give them at least 14 hours, to get them starting. They I lowered it down to about 13 hours and now we are at about 12 hours and will be slowly taking that down so them can shut down and the Marans eggs will perk up again with color.
I'm in. I was actually planning on putting some eggs in for a new year's hatch, lol.

ETA: Is there a minimum number that we need to incubate? I recall seeing something like 25 eggs, but I'm thinking that was only for the lowest hatch rate? My ducks and chickens haven't been laying super swell lately, so I know I cannot get 25 eggs. I'll be doing two different set dates, one for the ducks (I'll be setting cornish eggs then as well for an xmas hatch) then a week later more cornish eggs for this hatch.

I didn't know they did a military discount. I will let my friends know about that.
Quote: Nice eggs.
Quote: I would not add heat, that will not help them lay, you can add a 40 watt bulb and that should be enough
Quote: Good luck with that exotic chicken, turkeys are noisey
Well, looks like everyone is getting their eggs rounded up etc...

Dec. 11th at local time right?

The only reason my wife is missing the NYD hatch is because I have to keep the house warmer for the incubators.

At present we keep the house at about 65 at night. Great sleeping weather.

Good luck all you NYD hatchers!!!
Yes that is right, we have our thermostat at 62, and I was sweating last night had to open the windows
Okay.... so I have to work on the 11th.... so should I set my eggs that evening, I would have to set them the night before if I did it before....
You can set them the night before or in the morning, the noon set is for those who want to be involved in the first chick to hatch.
Quote: Yes everyone has personal hatch rates the set time is for those that enter the first chick to hatch NY, to make it fair. Hatch on it's getting closer Yeah

I keep my incubator at 65% from day one. I don't boost humidity at the end, but the wet down of the hatching chicks boosts it a little bit. I have had excellent hatch rates with this method with ducks, quail and chickens.
