4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

A 'deal breaker' for me would be if they had any hint of respiratory illness. Swollen eyes or sinuses, open mouthed breathing, depressed birds (standing alone, fluffed up with shoulders hunched).

Good luck in whatever you decide.

everyone sets at NOON THEIR TIME ZONE if you are wanting to enter the contest for first hatched.

noon eastern
noon central
noon mountain
noon pacific

doesnt matter where you live, if you want to enter first hatched its 12 noon your time, no special clocks needed

Getting excited!! Duck eggs come in the mail at noon today!!! Question~ they are only being shipped about 30 miles in PA so can and should I set them right away, and its really warm outside as well???? I want them to hatch with everyone elses!!
And should I NOT turn them, or wait to check out aircells?

Thank you!! first timer on Duck eggs!! Ancona and I am not sure how many she is sending either, just a few though! So any suggestions to those who hatch ducks successfully??? Thank you tons!!

So that is hour behind Eastern correct. I want to set an extra clock on my computer. As in Central?

No no, we're going by your own local time, so you'll be setting earlier than everyone on the west coast if you live on the east. If your egg hatches at midnight on the dot at your local time, that's the winner :)

I just put my 7 week old leghorn and crevecoeur chicks in with my 14 week old leghorn hens last night. I see the older hens bullying the younger over the yogurt i gave them! For some reason, my one older leghorn has a cut on her upper beak just before the nose, did one of the little ones get her?, kind of funny if they did, and would explain why she's not very pleased with them at the moment... LOL. I really hope nobody gets hurt though. The big leghorns have pecked the bottoms of the others a few times while I was there, but I don't think they really hurt them. They were more shoo'ing em away. I think. This is my first time integrating, so I'm nervous but I've been reading and know things should calm down in a week or so (I hope) and it doesn't seem too bad at the moment... Will keep an eye on them when I can....

Thanks so much! I have a question though, just for our understanding. The science project instructions said to keep the box as airtight as possible with duct tape. I'm confused why they would tell us to do that, when according to your experience they need air flow with air holes?

So we're going to try again... wish us luck! Does anyone think we still need a fan in there? We're going to get a temperature monitor in there and styrofoam the sides (thanks Bnewns!), get a hygrometer, keep it running to check the levels, and start again with all y'all on 12/11. :D Can't wait!

Sheree,
I know this was a bit ago, but Id try Coturnix Quail eggs in this, they are more forgiving then chicken eggs.

Any suggestions on cleaning eggs? Our chickens don't use their nest boxes, so the eggs are sometimes pretty dirty. I know I'm not supposed to wash them, I was thinking about a fine grade sandpaper?
