4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

400

Did this work.

Yikes. Yes, it worked.

Isn't that just horrible. I kept smelling his breath, whenever he got close. I knew something was rotten in there. When we took him to the vet, he said he didn't see anything rotten and suggested the teeth cleaning, glad I did, I knew he had a bad tooth, there is nothing like that smell from a dog. (not even gas)

My DH finished the diy incubator today, it just needs a few fine tunes to be ready.

Needs
1) Air holes , not sure how many???
2) Adjust the hot water heater thermostat Down some more (if poss.?) DH thought he put it down about as low as it would go & that would "cut off bulb at 100F" but it went to 104 b/f the bulb turned off -that is TOO HOT RIGHT? I need the bulb to turn off at what ? 101? 102?

Note- this is w/ 60 Watt bulb on max ( DH gave me a dimmer switch so I CAN fine tune) or change to 40 Watt bulb??

AH- it just clicked BACK ON at 100F

Should I just put air holes in and retest b/f messing w/ the water heater (which would be a major pain requiring uninstall)

3) I need to rig up a wire tray holder to hold the egg cartons w/ eggs on the pvc turner (DH made the handle on the outside tilts each way pvc frame like I asked :)
now I just gotta rig it for the eggs. I am planning to set them big end up in cardboard egg carton insert ( I cut a little hole in the bottom of each , right??) I understand something other than cardboard would be better but this is all I have so it will work, right??

This is my first (other than broody hen) egg hatching & I *really* want some healthy peepers on NYD...if any of you have advice from using a homemade cooler 'bator I'm all ears!

Funny you asked!!! Poppop was here on Sunday and had this conversation with him! Showed de Poppop who was the man..... "Poppop, everyone knows there ARE brown cows and strawberry milk is made from food coloring!! LOL

Well my uncle who I' will visiting on Sunday says I can take all the eggs he has collected for the last few days and up to Sunday to help fill my incubator on the 11th. My hens are preforming so poorly I didn't even know if I would get a bakers dozen.

So I'm going to pack that incubator as full as I can and see what happens on 1/1/13! Of course his flock is so mixed that I've no clue what will pop out chick wise. Oh well I will put them on Craigslist as special NYD baby chicks and see if they sell for spring egg layers.

Those bottom waterers with the heaters can be a pain. I found that if you get those dog waterers that plug in you can place an icecream bucket of water right inside of it. It works really nice if you have two empty buckets and you just fill one on your way outdoors and just exchange it. It also works great if you heat your Fermented Feed.

With finals week being next week, and a ton projects due before than. I found a couple of ways to include the hatch along in my college work. For my 8+ page research paper, I'm writing it on incubating eggs versus using a broody hen. For my narritive essay on something new that I tried, I'm going to try to write it on whatever I decide to build or sew for the ingenious chicken design conest. And for my drawing class, I'm going to try to draw an egg hatching. The art professor also gives bonus points for unique ideas, so might as well draw on an egg with a felt marker and turn that in as well. Gosh I'm good, I only hope I can get this all done on top of physics, I can't wait for christmas break...
