4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

Well, I'm torn.  We just had a terrible, heartbreaking hatch where my cheap Hovabator spiked temp and all the chicks died save one.  The one that did hatch had a horrific injury that made us put her down out of mercy.  I'm so discouraged, and feel responsible for her misery/condition.

My husband says that he got me a Brinsea for Xmas, which I'm sure will yield a much better hatch, but I don't know if I want to even incubate for a while. :/

So sorry. That is the worst.

What a busy day!

We propped some boards and stuff up around the duck pen, as wind breaks. Cleaned up the playroom (what a bunch of messy kids we have in this house!!! .... ; ), so I could have some table space to bring some feathered babies inside. I had to bring my Buttons inside along with my Guinea keets, and my broody hen. Anywho, momma chicken is due to hatch out 6 ducklings any day now! Fun!! I just knew she'd hatch them out tonight, the coldest night so far this year, so thats why she is inside. I pray the incubator, which is out in my poultry building stays nice and warm! Fingers, and toes crossed. It's stayed right at 100F so far.

I'll try and get a picture of all the feathered babies that are spending the night inside tonight. Good Night All! I'm going to go relax now after a stressful day.

Who'se pretty excited...I'm hoping to receive some eggs tomorrow or the day after...now find a spot where my wife can't find the incubator....

I planned on letting DH in on the NYD Hatch last night while we had company for dinner....ya know, 'the buffer strategy'. But somehow....NOTHING came out of my mouth when the time was right. Soooo, I set the incubator up in the family room, have the temps just about right and he hasn't said a thing. I'm not sure he noticed....Perhaps when it starts peeping?

You made me laugh, kinda an elephant in the room strategy going on there ; >
Maybe if you get him some good books or fav. magazine & put his drink coaster on the top of the 'bator you'll never hear a peep out of him about it!

I finally put together a calender of hatchings. After paying $700 for fuel oil, they gave us a calender (little consolation for the price, lol) so I stole it for the incubator. :) Five more days until my first hatch date, and they'll be cornish cross babies. :) I have so many hatch dates listed, but not really a lot of eggs... Right now, with various hatches, I have about 26 eggs in the front tray (duck/LF chicken sized flat) and seven in the back flat (quail flat, but has serama and some infertile coturnix, though I should be getting coturnix eggs either tomorrow or Tuesday to fill that space, lol). I LOVE hatching. It's a little bit late for hatching, but I was planning on hatching all winter... I just wanted to get started sooner so I had POL pekin pullets by April!
