4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

Well, I'm torn. We just had a terrible, heartbreaking hatch where my cheap Hovabator spiked temp and all the chicks died save one. The one that did hatch had a horrific injury that made us put her down out of mercy. I'm so discouraged, and feel responsible for her misery/condition.

My husband says that he got me a Brinsea for Xmas, which I'm sure will yield a much better hatch, but I don't know if I want to even incubate for a while.

I would incubate in the brinsea, I have a brinsea octagon eco 20 auto turn, works like a charm! Has hatched every single fertile egg i set in it, none with deformities. Easy to keep humidity and I know the temp will never spike, i could leave on day one come back day 17 and the temp would be fine. (then again the humidity would be a bit bad lol)

also i tried to hatch with a 1602N hovebator, it killed every single chick. Maybe its the open coils? but the temp and humidity was always fine.

I'm having issues with my brand new 1602N. I set it up when I first got it and had the temps just right. Then I shut it off and let it sit for a few days. I put the turner in on Friday morning and turned it back on, and now I can't get it regulated... The temp was too low, so I turned the thermostat 1/8 of a turn, and it spiked up to 104.5!! I put some water bags in there to simulate the eggs to see if I could get it regulated better. I turned the thermostat back 1/8 and the temp didn't change at all! I just cranked it down an entire turn, so we'll see where that gets me... Glad I'm messing with it now. I only have 2 days to get the dang thing to hold steady... Now I wish I would have invested in a better one, but being new at this hatching thing, I didn't want to jump in too deep until I knew what I was getting into... Maybe I'll have to just bite the bullet and spend the $$... Too late to get a new one for the NYD hatch though...

Are you giving an hour at least between adjustments? Using more than one thermometer? You've still got time.

FeyRaine. I like it! He's not one for reading, but perhaps a case of his favorite beverage strategically situated somewhere close to the bator?
