4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

18 eggs set for the NYD Hatchalong...

My incubator, a little red number that right now just has one tray in it (but can fit up to 3 turning racks). Temporary fan in place as I'm replacing the burned out fan that sits up above on a shelf with a computer fan. Inset shows the incubator with its "coat" in place. I have my incubator in the basement where it is a constant 65 degrees, so the coat helps the incubator maintain heat without working so hard. Love my cute little red incubator. :) Hatching tray is on the floor, heating element and fan at the top, along with thermostat along the right side. Photo 2 is a photo of my eggs set:

4 Olive Eggers (Blue Cuckoo OE (F1 Marans x Ameraucana) x Iowa Blue Rooster) - more additions to my layer flock
4 Bantam "Iowacanas" (Bantam Lavender Ameraucana x Iowa Blue - beginning of Bantam IBs - something about a non-blue chicken, named Iowa Blue, but lays blue eggs that tickles my fancy, lol.)
10 Iowa Blues - out of my favorite IB pair, very excited for those chicks!

Set my eggs right on time and then I found out tonight that I won't be home as planned for the hatch. Hubby just surprised me with a trip away and I'm sad about not being able to participate as planned, but really excited about going. My friend is going to hatch my eggs. A double edged sword for sure!!

I'll follow along up until we leave. Good luck with the prizes!

Some Silkie eggs are on the way!! They won't count for this hatch along but I am still excited! Never had Silkies before because my husband is super creeped out by the 5 toes thing

But I told him to suck it up and be a man, but that just made him glare at me.......

Well the fluff feet should cover up the wonky toes right? Well no matter, the boys are getting pet SILKIE EGGS FOR CHRISTMAS!! Or is that for me? Hehe.

ALSO, I had purchased some Lemon Blue Bantam Cochin eggs and they had not shown up yet. Checked the tracking online and says they were sent to my address in ALASKA!!!

I am kicking myself right now!! But the nice lady at my local Alaska post office forwarded the box to my California address. It will me a CHRISTMAS MIRACLE if they survive the trip. In the meantime, the super awesome BYC seller is sending me more, bless their heart, even though it was clearly my mistake. THANKS BYC member Sierra View!! You are AMAZING!!!

HOW IS EVERYONE ELSE DOING?! ANYONE ELSE WAITING ON EGGS? HAVE ANY CRAZY STORIES SO FAR FROM THIS YEARS NYD HATCH ALONG? I know it is a bit early, but as you can see.....some crazy stuff happens before you even get a chance to set the little eggs!!

BTW, if anyone was interested in my techno project I had mentioned in previous posts, you can check the graphs ONLINE at this link --> HEY! CLICK ME!

This graphs show one system hooked to 2 different home made cardboard box incubators. Only one has a humidity sensor in it but that will change once I get the other one in the mail. If my temp or humidity strays outside the safe zone that I set, I will get an emailed alert telling me what the problem is. If you guys think this is neato, let me know!

HAPPY HATCHING!!

Well my genesis seems to be working fine, but running a degree too low. The temperature it's set at is 100 degrees and it claims that it's at 99.5 most of the time though the thermometer that I've calibrated and used for numerous sucessful hatches claims it's only 97 - 98 degrees. Any recommendations? Which should I trust? If it is running at 98, will that be ok for the chicks or would I need to get the heat up?

Ah it is so much fun watching all of you and realize, I'm not having to tend to bators during the holidays for the first time since 2007.

I'll probably be here for the HUGE Easter Hatch a long....

And now we are counting down..... 20 days until hatch!!
