What's the temperature where you are???

Has the snow started for you, yet? We're still way too warm for snow, but DANG, this sky sure looks like it WANTS to!

EDIT to Add: That was written less than 20 minutes ago. That fast, we've dropped to 31F and we have a fine. steady snow that's falling straight down in sheets, like rain. Why don't we ever get a NORMAL snow? :p
Yup started around 4 and it was a very cold and slushy walk out to put the ducks and Geese away.
Hoping to see less than 5 inches this time

I also live somewhere that always gets a lot of snow and I just don't understand the grocery store panic like does 18 in of snow suck? Yes. Are towns that are used to getting 18 in of snow completely cleaned up by the following morning? Also yes haha. Are our utility companies putting a ton of linesmen on call for any downed lines and power outages? ALSO yes 😂 so crazy the panic buying every time there's a storm. It reminds me of when people who go for 3 days of vacation pack like 15 pairs of underwear do you suddenly think you're going to crap your pants every single day, do you suddenly think you're going to need 30 sandwiches during your one day power outage 😂😂 it makes sense a little more in places that aren't used to it but drives me crazy around here! Also why buy the 2 most perishable items in the store before a storm 😂😂😂
We don't get much snow but it happens here with the wind and cancelled boats.

There are dairy farms and bakeries (who I assume keep at least a few days' worth of flour etc. in stock) on the island. Yes, you might need to actually go and support your local shop instead of getting everything from the big supermarket in town, but no one is going to starve. And maybe just accept that having all sorts of exotic air-freighted fruit and veg available year-round isn't actually normal or sustainable. Nowt wrong with tatties, neeps and kale.

I didnt say anything about not supporting small businesses? But i may also be misreading your comment and youre saying you agree with me and that folks can go buy the stuff they need to make bread and dont need to flock to the supermarket haha and if so totally agree! Especially living on an island! I'm sure that adds another level of complexity to weather situations for you guys!

No, sorry, I'm agreeing with you! Here people will panic buy and clear out the shelves in the big supermarkets in the main town (who get almost all of their stock delivered from down south, by boat - unless the boats are all cancelled because it's too windy) when the smaller local shops are much less affected because they sell locally produced & bottled milk, and locally baked bread.

I figured haha sorry I read it again snd was like oh yep I'm an idiot 😂😂 living on an island has got to add a lot of extra complexity to those types of issues as well I'm sure! Hopefully your prices aren't too crazy seeing as everything has to get boated in! Also totally makes sense then to Homestead as much as humanly possible like you do especially!

Also what a shame! Local bread and milk is always the best! There are alot of meat farmers in my area and dairies but not many bakeries weirdly. I use a bread machine to make simple toast bread for breakfast but nothing beats a bakery fresh crusty loaf thats for sure!

They'll mostly be using flour that came up on the boat tbf - wheat doesn't grow well here and while there is a place milling locally grown bere barley, that only tends to be used for bread when mixed with other colours - but I assume they keep enough flour in stock that they don't have to stop baking every time there's no boats for a few days.

Ridiculously, we don't have an abattoir here now. Livestock have to be sent down south for slaughter and then the carcasses brought back up to the butchers here. There's someone trialling a small-scale mobile abattoir and talk of opening up a new permanent site, but I'll believe that when it happens.

Oh wow! Are local folks allowed to process meat on their private property or are there rules that all meat animals need to be shipped for slaughter? (Also sorry thread i know this isnt weather related but I am fascinated by how all the different food systems around the world operate lol)
