4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

I just candled my eggs and saw a tiny little heart beat in one of the white ones. I can't tell whats going on in hardly any of them being that it's just after day 2 in incubation, but that little heart beat just made my night.

AWWWW! We tried to candle, couldn't see anything. Maybe now that we have all those great pics, we will try again and see something.

So, I read the recommended threads about detached air cells and shipped eggs, and read some very helpful advice in a couple PMs, and would it be a safe bet to rest the eggs for at least 6 hours. Then I would put them in the incubator pointy end down in a carton and leave them like that for at least the first week.

I am just a bit scared because of the horror stories I have read on threads about chicks dying or coming out all wonky because the egg wasn't perfect. I have had plenty of chickens in my time, but this is my first hatch. I always knew I could get the temp/humidity working, but I don't think I would know what to do in an emergency. I will be giving these little country trekking eggs a chance at least, but I hope they will come out for NYD and be safe and happy!

Yes! Candle to make sure there are no cracks and use your nose to smell out any that spoil. Also, check them to make sure none of them are weeping.

Two hatches ago I and 6 out of 26 go bad--three of them seeped into the water tray.

You have an excellent chance of having a good hatch!

If you have a phone with internet you could e-mail it to yourself and then post it. I don't have internet but took the picture with my phone, texted to my husband and he emailed it to me on his work phone.
The net on my phone doesn't work anymore and I have no service to it. I need to go through the closet and find the cord or I'll never get the pics up.

I love seeing that! I can't wait till I can see if my seramas are developing. I just set them today, so I won't know anything for a few days.

I'm so mad at my hens right now!

First they have really slowed down laying due to winter, which is not that big of a deal but I wanted to fill my incubator for the NYD hatch along. So I realize that I'm not even going to have a dozen eggs last week. Thankfully I had a trip planned to see my Uncle and liberated him of a dozen eggs to help fill out the incubator.

So I got 38 eggs in my Hovabator 1588 with auto turner so I have a few empty holes.. Today I discover that my two escape artist hens had made a nest in one of my goats Igloo house (he is a young buckling ). I've no clue how these gals get out of the pen but somehow they have a spot I've yet to find (and we are talking hours of looking for it) that they just come on out and mock the other chickens who are not out! I usually let them free range but between the arrival of a sudden predator that napped 4 hens, and the need to make sure I had eggs for the hatch a long I've had them penned up for a few weeks. But of course Houdini 1 & 2 (and they are 2 of only 3 laying right now) decided that a nest where I couldn't see it was better!

I've been wondering why his house looked so clean as I usually have to clean it out every couple of days, guess I should of popped the top and looked because they had their nest all the way back towards the rear where I couldn't see it.

Anyways I could've had a full incubator, or no need for the Uncles eggs! I swear those gals are going on craigslist now!

your very welcome!!! I have an 8 year old who is now into hatching so visuals were a MUST for us!

Well, mine are 14 & 15, and an age range of 4-Hers. We have seen ultrasounds on many animals, watched horses, dogs,& cats be born, but never done a hatch. We have always just received our chicks in the mail. My hubby thinks I'm crazy, but I just love all of this!

Ill have duck eggs soon

Remove the egg turner and look up tetris stacking the eggs. You can get more than 100 eggs in your Genesis!

Mark the new ones so they don't count for the hatch-along.
