4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

Quote:
It is a bit early(if chicken eggs set on Tuesday), so try again in 4 or 5 days. I know it is tempting but it is better to not candle for the first 7 days. For shipped eggs, they should be pointy end down straight up for that time.

You will have more hatch if you do this.

Remove the egg turner and look up tetris stacking the eggs. You can get more than 100 eggs in your Genesis!

Mark the new ones so they don't count for the hatch-along.

I could pop them in there but then I would chicks from two hens that drive me nuts on a daily basis! Do I really want to have their lines giving me more grey hairs then I already have?

LOL Yeah I figured out not long after I got it that the Genesis is an awesome incubator with a lot of room. I've actually thought of trying to see if an Emu egg would fit in there. I just have no clue what I would do with one after it hatched! Probably drive me nuts like the chickens.

If you hatch out an Emu you can give it to me..so it'll drive me nutz, bonkers, wacky, cuckoo, insane, etc.

Just a suggestion.....

Funny stuff.. The chickens are being chickens, they sound like very smart chickens if you could not find the eggs, it was very resourceful of them. When a chicken is using natural instinct it is a very good thing and raises the value of the chicken. The escape artist are probably your best chickens and are good at predator avoidance, or perhaps they noticed something in the coop they did not like and are protecting there future chicks. When our chickens do this, it is something worth checking out. Other times it is just a hen hiding her nest so she can hatch out her chicks in privacy and safety. I am sure your chickens do not drive you nuts or you would not have chickens. Your story is very entertaining and I visioned you egg hunting to no avail. You have very smart chickens.

QUESTION: SHOULD I CHANGE MY TUNE ON CLEANING EGGS! AND TURNING even shipped eggs? Now I second guess myself and all my notes and the decisions I have come to from all those notes!

NOTE dirty duck egg and NOTE DEAD EMbryo in it on candle bottom pic!!!

There is an interesting read in my hatching notes about relevance of turning and sticking embryo... feel free to read it. link in signature... all it did was confuse me more : (

So either this egg was too dirty or just didnt get turned right :( which could easily be the case since I was unexpectedly in the hospital during day 4-8.

see that black spot around 1 oclock, it wiggles and moves a tad inside but stuck to shell... that was embryo
