4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

DON'T WORRY I WON'T TOUCH THEM!! **CHICK UPDATE**

So far I have:

6 of 10 externally pipped

1 is currently zipping (I think)

There is peeping here and there but I can't tell from who. The massive load of TJ eggs I had went into a hatcher at my neighbor's house, all went accept 5 I kept to make my personal batch of 10 eggs. He says they are all pipping fine over there but I have not gone down to see them.

I will keep checking everyone until I see what they look like.

The kids and I did eggtopsies on all of the pulled eggs, and none of them had any development. I assume they weren't fertile... The mystery egg I pulled yesterday had a blood ring... 2 of the questionable eggs looked to have development, but we didn't see clear veining or movement, but all of the questionable ones have dark shells. The other two, I'm pretty sure aren't developing, but we couldn't agree on that, and we aren't experienced enough to make that call for sure. So far, we've been right about the ones we pulled, but I'd hate to be the one that had to explain to my kids why we opened an egg with a live embryo in it...

I also would hate to be the one who had to clean up an exploded egg from my bator!

Well I still have 6 eggs with movement and 2 that are too dark to tell. This is the first night that I haven't lost any... I still don't know why the others died but I have a feeling it had to do with the fact that they were shipped.

I have a question -- If tonight (day 10 ) I can not see any air cell in a dark egg, should I assume bad & toss it, or wait more days??

Is it glowing? Does it smell bad?

If not I would wait a bit longer, especially if it is getting darker.

I didn't explain well, it is a maran egg so the shell is very dark

I WAS able to see into most of them well enough to see a light area up at the top (air cell) and a small black blob w/ movement (embro)

However, there were a couple were a could not discern anything whatsoever , so should I assume those are duds? or keep them in a while longer?
There was no off odor etc, but I don't want to wait too long and risk an egg-splosion :( , but then again I'd hate to toss a live one just b/c I couldn't see in...

OK - 2nd Question--

I'm a little concerned b/c the air cells on the good ones (w/ movement of embryos) looked rather large to me conpared to a chart someone posted early on this thread.
My humidity has been running rather dry, I wasn't worried b/c tons of ppl have posted about doing fine w/ lower humidity, but now I'm a wondering if I need to change what is going on.
So far the humidity has been around 20% in the bator, when it has gone down to 17-16% I've put in a hot wet cloth which shoots it up to the 40% range and it falls back slowly to 20%.
House air humidity is running 50-40%s btw.

So do I have a problem if the air cell are on the big side at this point? If this is bad what can I do at this point to fix it?

Thanks
