4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

I just found out I am on call over New Year's Eve/Day.... I will be seriously bummed if I get called out and miss my first hatch! I told my DD that she's going to have to watch the bator if that happens so she can take a picture with her iPhone in it when the first chick hatches... My brother and SIL and their kids might be coming over to await the hatch with us!

Ugh, I hate inconsiderate people...And what makes it worse is it is my FAMILY. Literally want to

Good morning everyone.
What's going on inside our chicken eggs - Day 11:
From-Egg-to-Chicken-11.jpg

After the tenth day of incubation, feathers and feather tracts are visible and the beak hardens.

Interesting fact -- Most females have two functional ovaries, but chickens and most other birds have only one ovary and one oviduct. In early states of embryonic development, each female chick has two ovaries; only the left one develops into a functional organ. In some birds, such as hawks, the right ovary and oviduct usually develop.

Migraine day for me (Ugh). Celebrating Christmas with relatives is going to be just Great today! Maybe the meds will kick in by then.

OK - 2nd Question--

I'm a little concerned b/c the air cells on the good ones (w/ movement of embryos) looked rather large to me conpared to a chart someone posted early on this thread.
My humidity has been running rather dry, I wasn't worried b/c tons of ppl have posted about doing fine w/ lower humidity, but now I'm a wondering if I need to change what is going on.
So far the humidity has been around 20% in the bator, when it has gone down to 17-16% I've put in a hot wet cloth which shoots it up to the 40% range and it falls back slowly to 20%.
House air humidity is running 50-40%s btw.

So do I have a problem if the air cell are on the big side at this point? If this is bad what can I do at this point to fix it?

Thanks
FeyRaine

I would raise the humidity. Following the chart is the best thing to do as air cells that are too large at the time of hatch will prevent chicks from getting into hatching position causing many of them to suffocate and air cells too small will drown chicks when they make their internal pip. Simply increase the humidity to fix it. Everyone needs a different humidity level so thats why you need to follow the chart. Good Luck!

For those who had eggs shipped, I saw a somewhat disturbing video on the morning news a couple days ago.
It was a story about the busiest mail delivery day of the year filmed at the mail sorting facility in Hazelwood, MO. All the scanning and sorting was done on automated equipment and the package movement was smooth on belts but at several points all the packages tumbled to a lower conveyor belt.
As I watched I was trying to imagine what was happening inside the eggs in all those packages.

I know several people have asked about this and I just got the news this morning.

This was posted on
