4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

Thank you so much everyone! We are out of danger and no reports have come in of any major damage. There's still a storm in the area, but it looks like everything is going to be ok.

So glad to hear! Tornados are scary... Before I was born, my parents house was destroyed by a tornado. They were always told to go into the southwest corner of the basement. Thankfully, they were gone camping because 5 rows of concrete block came down in the southwest corner! I spent most of my childhood being very paranoid about tornados. We would be in the basement if the storm was bad at all, and in the corner under the workbench if there was a watch!

When I first started hatching I wanted to know what was going on inside my eggs. Yes you can candle and see "shadows" but I wanted to see how it really looked. After doing some searching I found 2 sites that gave me all the information I wanted.
Days 1-21 Inside an egg

Day by day

I am glad you enjoy the photos and information. I do not mean to offend anyone with them just some basic knowledge of what a chick goes through from the time we set them until the day they hatch.

I love the photos!! It was because of them that I was able to determine when my quitter quit on me.... Keep them coming, please!!

I never ask this of anyone, but would everyone please pray for me and my family? There's a tornado in my area and it was last seen heading my way. The weather has gotten really nasty here today and things are getting worst.
Raz you have been on my thoughts, ya all ok???

Welcome to a world of opinions, not science! LOL It's just like hatching, what works for you may not work for me.....

Hopefully you get the temperatures right, I have had many very long nights for that same reason but my new genesis seems to never flucuate. And I showed my aunts and cousins and everyone the developing eggs last night and they were all amazed.  It really is exciting, I get excited every night and I've done it hundreds of times. Many of them couldn't believe that the embryos had blood vessels forming around them as well as within them. So what did your great-nephews think about the eggs?

Only 1 week left, I'm getting soo eggcited! :weee

They were pretty fascinated. The younger one got bored and left, but the older one stayed for all 36 eggs. I started asking him to tell me if they were alive or not. They are not always the best behaved little boys, so I set down the rules about not touching the incubator or the eggs because they would kill the chicks. The younger one only tried to touch the bator once. Now they want to be at my house for New Years Eve to watch the hatch!

We had some young guests this week, 10 and 14. Had my son candle for them, and they were amazed. On the other hand....had the 3 and 5 year old grands here last night and to avoid temp spikes, eggs missing? Broken, ect...we avoided the incubator completely. They know that that's where Grandmom's chicks start off sometimes and are all over it!
Razadia, so very glad to hear that you and your family are well.

I was really concerned that after seeing the eggs, the boys might try to sneak away and mess with them, but my bator is in my basement bathroom and I have a gate at the top of my basement stair that is really tricky to open. So I shut that and we didn't have any issues...

4th time candling another random assortment of eggs. Is it weird I haven't found a single non-developing egg? lmao. I only counted the chicken eggs for the hatch but so far none have been tossed. did toss 9 turkey and duck eggs, buuuut i do have development in a lone duck egg and in now 6 turkey eggs :D So Im happy with that lol

I want turkey eggs!!! Are they more difficult to hatch than chickens? I've convinced myself now that I want to get eggs and hatch them out and start breeding and raising my own turkeys, too...

I candled today to show my great-nephews (7 & 5) what the developing embryos looked like. I pulled the 4 questionable eggs. 2 of them looked like they were not fertile, and two of them looked like maybe they quit on day 2 or 3... Then I had to pull one more that looked like it had a blood ring. It was doing very well at day 10. Trying to compare it to he pics hat are posted about the development, I'd say it quit about 2 days ago... Then my incubator temp spiked to 102.4!!! I only pulled 5 eggs, and it had been holding really nice and steady for days... Frustrating... I turned it down, but now I'm gonna have to stay up law to make sure it is holding without dropping too low... I have 31 of my 45 that are still going strong, so I'd sure hate to lose them to a bad temp fluctuation.

On the worming conversation... I read that pumpkins are a natural way to de-worm your birds. So every halloween, I feed my chickens the insides of the pumpkins we carve. I have no proof that it works, nor do I know that it works but it says that it does in many different places and I try to avoid chemicals if I can.

Thanks cochins!

I do use Pumpkin and DE but I would like to do a preventative and have a schedule for both dogs and chickens, not necessarily the same wormer lol.... I have one for the mutts lol say every spring and perhaps one other time???? But I keep reading so much stuff, there is no proof in the cayanne pepper and not so sure I would feed that to my girls. Imagine all the "tweets" coming out of their rears! lol just kidding

but seiously some of ya all hatchery farmer dudes/dudetts must be able to send me in the correct direction ?????
