4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

I have a question: when we candled tonight, the egg looked kinda like there was still a lot of room in it. We could still see veins on both sides of the chick. Is that ok? Should we lock down later?

I've had eggs before that looked like they were way behind and fairly empty at lockdown. It's amazing how they can just catch up in those last couple of days and hatch just fine.

Yesterday while cleaning my sewing/incubator room a large picture fell off the wall and landed on top of my styrofoam incubator that I have my NYD eggs in. Amazingly it did not break the windows or the styrofoam, but it did push the top down into the eggs. The fan squished one egg and dented another. The egg that was squished had an early quitter in it (probably day 10 or so). The dented one has a chick in it which was still moving around when I put my eggs into lockdown today. I'm down to 19 of 46 eggs and there are about 5 that are really iffy if they are still going or have quit late on me. Not great results, but some were shipped and others were from my young pullets and their young cockerals. Some are not getting the job done yet.

New Year's is one of the most busy holidays at our house. We began a tradition years ago when the kids were very little of my parents, my sister and her family of 6 and my little brother coming and staying for New Years. They live close to each other but 4 hours from us, so we usually do the travelling for Holidays. It is crazy busy and generally many people end up sleeping on the floor since bed space is an a premium. This year will be the most we've had here since some of our teens have boyfriends and girlfriends that they are inviting over (they won't stay overnight). Our one DD is also inviting 2 of her friends to stay over because they do nothing at their own homes that evening. Starting tomorrow and through Jan. 1 we will have between 16 and 20 people staying at our house and playing games, eating and having plain ole' fun. Hopefully it will be warm enough for the kids to put their snow-stuff on and run off some energy outside.

We will have lots of spectators for the hatch.

Mine is looking about the same.... I will lock down once the kiddos are in bed, but as of now, I have 15/48 left... so we'll see, I also found out my young cockerels are not fertilizing all the eggs yet, plus some shipped eggs, must have been too cold for them... so I am NERVOUS about it all now!!

Blarney, here is my Missy... Loves the snow too..I love the kind of dog you have..they are even bigger than goldens! She's in the deep part, the others on the path, they are too short for the deep stuff, and besides, don't care for it as much as Missy. She was trying wriggle away, getting big by Christmas. Yes, she is pure. I've never seen one with the white, but it can happen, especially since they started breeding the whites. Papers yes, do I ever send in papers for my pure bred dogs. No. We don't mind, she was the only one in the litter with the white, we think it's cute. Proof, of a Missy dog. :p
Thank You! What a beautiful pup!

Sally, what do you put on the soda can in your mouse trap? And I assume water goes in the bottom? Where do you put it? I assume not where the chickens are, but then again, why not? If they eat the mice, it'd probably be ok (unless they'd been poisoned) Do rats get in there as well?

im so jealous of all the early peepers!!!
but it also reminded me I have a lot to do still! Need to get some chick starter ASAP! And something to brood them in for the first couple weeks, large cardboard box I am thinking, unless I find something better!

Peanut Butter on the Can.... never had anything in it but mice and moles? Like she said we had been discussing how to make the water NOT freeze in it.... Its great for in the coop, but chickens DO LIKE PButter so you gotta set it up when they are roosting and when those critters are out is best

Geez - that was a lucky break (no pun intended). Sure hope the rest of yours hatch for you. I'm down to 14 from 36.
