4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

Not sure i posted on here in the beginning as my hatch was BBS Orps was to be Dec29th ..However i didnt take in account i set at 10;30 at night so 10;30 pm Dec 29-Dec 30 10;30 pm was day 21...
.My eggs began to pip and then one hatched Dec 30 the other 1 took until Jan 31 about 4 am and the last who had been pipped since the day before was an assist . Got him out 8 am. Wing was glued to the shell and membrane.... So 2 WERE on NY Eve not NY DAY though.
He was falling over on his back every 2 seconds after hatch though he was ill but his wing was glued to his side he couldnt balance!
Guy was sticky too
Guess that big pip hole he had let in too much air
First pic he looks pathetic after i tryed t o get his wing unglued with pretty much success but needed 2 more cleanings.

Photo Today Hes not in with the in crowd yet as you can see Still not real fluffy either but way betterHope he makes it '

Here are my 4 silkies and one "mutt" in the back corner.

This was my first time hatching shipped eggs. I set 18, 6 made it to lockdown, and 4 hatched. The mutt is from a broody that deserted her post at the last minute. I had no idea how far along it was; it just happened to hatch on 1/1.

My hatch rate from my own hens is usually about 90%, but the last one I did from my eggs I had 4 out of 15 that looked fully develope but never pipped. I had 2 like that this time. This is a new problem for me. :(

The poor hatch rate last time could have been a humidity problem, were you comparing air cell development?

If you dont have any external pips right now you can up your humidity to its highest point you are using and then quickly take out the chicks IF they are dry. They can stay in for a day even maybe more but need to be pretty dry so they dont chlll. which takes some hours If you have cracks dont do it.
SEE what the humidity goes down to when youre done and add water by spray bottle works well to up it fast if it drops too low.

I do have 1 external pip, but it doesn't seem to be doing anything. Not sure when it pipped as it was on the down side of it's egg (it got rolled over by the hatchlings) and it's just a crack, not a hole so I can't see if there is anything moving inside. I guess I'll just wait until morning to see if this egg does anything at all .. I'd just like to get my chicks into the brooder. The first chick hatched 24 hrs ago already.

Well, now I can't wait until spring! I'm hoping I'll have my own eggs to hatch then! I won't be able to join the Easter hatch because we'll be out of town, but I hope to hatch right after Easter :) This was fun, and hopefully my last hatch that required shipped eggs! LOL.

I've seen my babies eat, but not drink. I figure they know where it is (not a big box!) and will do just fine. I need to find a bigger box than my nesquick box 'cause I bet in 4-5 days they won't be able to stand in there anymore... can't think of anything though.... maybe I'll just go with a cardboard box then??

Seems i go on and on about this but i have had 12 hatches and 11 were shipped. They are so scrambled in shipping 4 is good well at least par. 3-5 is my normal hatch Had one shocker 10 hatched of 14. 3 got zero!!!
Some ppl think they are ok if they see movement early on but no ...Some die later from shipping too. Read in some professors study this is true
This last hatch i got 3 and candled more yesterday i think 4 or 5 look good day 12. Will see what hatches day 21...
I feel lucky if i get 2 from shipped, As I said on some thread earlier over 2 is gravy with shipped for me anyway but icontinue ordering from BYC and Ebay as i cant seem to find the colors and breeds i want in my state.
Local and your own ....usually .way better hatches .
