4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

Yay i can hear chirping but cant see the pip. Not due til early friday morning.i can jear the egg moving but cant see which one. Im excited finally hatching some chicks after trying 6 dozen i havr 14 of 14 that were fertile in lockdown. 7 were not fertile. Hope i get a good hatch. Can't wait to see what i get. Roosters are Dominicker and buff orpington. Hens are a variety
Backyard flock lol. Wish me luck.

I am so thankful I chose the Hatch-Along for my first attempt at incubating chicks. I have had a wonderful time...It was so nice knowing there were new friends waiting to share both the good and the not so great times throughout the whole adventure! It is a wonderful blessing and another wonderful miracle and I am so happy to have known this experience.
I have to agree! This has been a great experience. Even though my hatch rate stands at less than 50%, we did better than some.

Oh well can't hold it in! I've got 17+ chickies! 4 courtinix quail, 11 + Copper marans, 1+ brown leghorns, ( frizzle?) polish over barred Rock, and a mallard!
Wow! Great job~

Thanks. Nothing on eggs. Dog is MUCH better!! Vet says we are lucky to still have her…but be prepared. She is a 10 yr old Great Dane and can hardly support her back end.
Have you tried a chiropractor? My old Greyhound, no gone over the rainbow bridge, had so much relief in his last year from some adjustments!

I have to offer an apology on behalf of my new chick to everyone who was watching him on my webcam after his pip yesterday. I waited and waited on him all day to start zipping, but had to give up at midnight and shut things down.

Then while I was brushing my teeth and getting ready for bed, my husband calls to me: "Honey, did you know the egg is almost done zipping?"

Frakkin' what?! Zipping in like, 10 minutes? What kind of mutant chickens does Whole Foods sell eggs from? When I looked at him, he wasn't even zipping correctly either. It looked like he got halfway around the egg, then just went "To heck with this, raaaaaaaaaaaaawr Godzilla time!", and just shattered the entire top half of the egg while I was watching.

No worries though, he has received a stern lecture on how to properly hatch. He won't do it again, I promise.

Though it does seem that I do have to worry about other strange mutant behavior. Overnight he randomly divided, and we woke up to two chickens in the bator. Nevermind the empty shell, it's entirely his fault, I know it.
You need to make this into a short story! We all laughed!!!!!

I just read that a nurse uses her stethoscope to listen for their chicks chirping in the bator and if she needs to pull and candle!! NOW WHY didn't I think of this???? I would look so much better with a stethoscope than my ear shoved against that bator, yet alone being a tad more comfortable!! LOL
Why is it that the obvious is so hard to fathom? HAHAHA

STINK EYE!

Now I wish I had set duck eggs, too!

guess my eggies thought this was the January Hatch A Long...
I have five Jubilee Orpingtons out, a polish trying... and now a Barred Rock just popped out! I have some pips in there too...
the marans are being totally lazy tho... but I'm not ready to give up... I think they are just 'late bloomers'!!!
Mine are taking forever too!

Just wanted to share a pic of my littles. Other than the 4 RIR and 2 lav Ams, I'm pretty much clueless as to which are my black mutts and which are BR or BAs. Well it will become clear over time I guess.

Well, unfortunately the remaining eggs look like day 17 or 18 quitters. I opened them all and nothing viable was left. So sad, but at least I got 4 healthy babies! I really wasn't expecting super awesome results considering the source. It's not like grocery stores are careful about shipping. That, along with the low temps and the age by the time they get to the store, and I'm amazed I got 4!!! I originally set 11.

Here's some pics of them all fuffed up.

Didn't this contest end? I hope you can still vote, I don't know where the thread is.
Sounds a lot like a Silkie, but egg color looks to dark to my eye, I can't tell from the photo, is the skin black? That is a Silkie trait.
Awwww! You are so sweet. I haven't given up hope yet. Missy n FeyRaine's are coming along...maybe....?
Nope, her skin is pale. but my chicks are all random... haha. :)

it's a little hard to catch on the camera, but she's a reddish brown and black... it seems she has black skin on her face, but not all over. :hmm

OK aside from the first chick there seems to be nothing going on with the remaining 19 eggs..absolutely nothing...I sure hope I am not going to end up with a lone chick...I don't think they even sell chicks at the feed store in January so I don't know if I'd be able to get him a buddy...keep your fingers crossed everyone!!!
