4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

Ahhh.... such cute chick pics!! I want to post some of my own so badly!! I set about 10pm on the 11th and had my first pip this morning... I can see it breathing in there, the hole is good-sized and it is chirping occasionally... I see a few of the others rolling a bit, so I hope I get more pips soon!!

I had 13 go to lockdown, out of 48, so I really hope I get more than one chick...

for me please!!

This is my first time incubating, always used a broody before, but I know that my temps were good and humidity also didn't have huge swings... but I had mostly shipped eggs, with a few of my own, many of my own were infertile from the pen with young cockerels... And we got a good cold spell the weekend before the 11th, so the shipped eggs could have been scrambled and chilled.... Really hoping for better luck next time....

Please chickies be ok in there!!

Listen to it, and see if it is getting weaker. It will be quiet a lot, but if he is moving and when he does peep, if it's strong, let him have the time he needs to absorb his blood and yolk :)
It still seems to be relatively vigorous, peeping and butting the shell every now and then. I'll just wait it out. The other one that was pipped when I got up this morning is now beginning to zip by the looks of it so ... rather than obsessing, I'm going to go play it cool, do some more work on my brooder and let them do their thing!

Hopefully! I still have two eggs that haven't pipped at all yet. If they haven't done so by the time these two hatch and dry, I'll candle to see if they have internally pipped. Sheesh, I can't stand here all day everyday after all!

So, I took this week off of work, partially as a staycation and partially to be on hand for the hatch. And I'm starting to realize that I suck at this whole 'staycation' business.

I'm roughly six and a half hours in, and I've cleaned the house, done repairs to the coop, hung a wall of our wedding pictures, emptied and scrubbed down the fridge, done laundry, vaccuumed, and packed away Christmas items.

It's becoming very very clear that I have no idea how to go about this 'relaxation' stuff. lol

Here's my only chick so far. I do have hope for one other egg, but the rest are dead.

For those of you who saw my thread, he's doing a lot better. He is a lot less 'mushy' now and he can stand with support. He's not walking yet, but I have been given some ideas of how to get there.

Here he is standing with some support:

Here's the problem with his legs, they stay in front of him like this and he flings them up and down which gets him no-where.

Try hobbling his legs and place him in a coffee mug. I have one doing something similar and the treatment seems to be working.

Nothing wrong with that as long as you enjoy what you are doing !

Yes! this is what I was talking about. Believe it or not..this little one will get stronger. Those legs look nice standing together, like I said, some will do the paddle walk. That's what I call it. They paddle along. It usually takes up to three of four days before they will get the hang of standing..up. lol..funny to watch now that I know they end up being fine. That's a cute chickie.

Well then! I have a pip!! My eggs are due to hatch on Fri. I was hoping my one and lonly little Nankin would hatch and hatch early. Looks like it may happen. Just never know how long from the pip to zip. But, I'm thinking I may have me a baby by tonight or tomorrow. I wanted it to hatch early so it could be strong enough for those other 5. Those eggs are huge! Dad, a pure RIR and hens sex links. Good egg layers. I will be watching my bator sooner than later now.

Hi Pele!

When you are on Staycation, you are supposed to do Touristy things in you own town, not stay home and fix the coop and etc....
