4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

You can't use them if the room is too cold. I use one in the garage and it gets down to 40 in there at night(Gotta love California!). If you are using the 20 with bantams, you can remove one of the sides and leave it at an angle for the small chicks.

To answer your question, The eco glow is like the mother hen. If the chicks are cold, they stand up and make contact with the black warm part. I have been using mine for a year now and have had hundreds of chicks under them. Not a single one has died from being too cold or too hot. You do not need thermometers with it and you do not need to worry about catching the house on fire. And like a mother hen, they do not heat the area up to 95 degrees.

They pay for themselves in electricity savings in a month or so too.

I hope this helps!
I just ordered one so I hope it works. the lamps are so difficult to control. Brinsea has a nice sale right now if you haven't heard already!
I thought I was finished hatching, checked on the chicks drying in the incubator and one of the 3 remaining eggs has pipped.

for late hatchers!

FACE PALM - I just seriously messed up!

Chicks B & W doing fine, I needed to check Egg L to see if it was making any sound,
a few hrs ago I set it on the wet washcloth I have in the bator to try to ensure it got max humidity.

Every other time when I've been checking the eggs I have held it inside the bator w/ the lid nearly on over my forearm and
LOOKED for a pip.

This time (being sleep depribed I looked at the top, reached in pulled it out to put it to my ear,
and there was a pip on the bottom !! EEK, so I touched my finger to water and water to the tiny spec of membrane
but if I just shrinked wrapped this one , wow, what can I say at this point, just wow...

Shipped eggs are due tomorrow as well. These are my second batch of shipped eggs. First batch was 40 coturnix eggs.... Got 11. Wait, I did have seramas shipped this winter too, all seven eggs shipped hatched. They're about two weeks old now.

Ooo, if they come tomorrow, let us know how they look to you..sometimes in the winter they will weep from going from cold to warmer areas. Are these going to be chicken eggs? 7 out of 7 shipped eggs hatched! Wow, that's great.
Waiting for news on shipped eggs. I want to order some EE's really bad..or, just some nice little barred rocks. Wish I could find a combination of both. :D

oh & pigs, like a 450 gilt first delivery my first ever pig, half wild razor back, 7 hrs of 50% breach and the final one encased inside inverted afterbirth & I'm alone at that point and had to climb in with her (which can be deadly yes major risk) and I have to get the last piglet out, & cleaned to breath and in the process learn they are born w/ a full set of razor sharp teeth in those mouths.

But right now I still that that was easier,
& I actually have a slice in my index finger right now that I got sometime in the past 24 hrs and I have no idea when,
but it could have been on an eggshell for all I know.

Yes, pigs might just be easier than this! Goats are, & I've had to reach elbow deep in one.

Ok, so I just read that in a still air incubator you are supposed to keep the temp 101-102. Is that correct? I thought I knew what temp to keep it at ( I kept it at 99-100).
I don't think that alone would have killed all of my eggs right, it should have just slowed things down. But am I really supposed to keep it at 101-102 in a still air bator?

Too bad I can't tell my barred rock eggs apart... I have EE and ameraucana eggs but my barred rock hen is covered by leghorns and ameraucanas. My shipped eggs are due to hatch tomorrow. I just got maran ans D'Uccle eggs yesterday and they were all in great shape. :)
