Quote: Thanks, mine is set up in the basement. It is heated but only around 63° down there. I'll drape something over that area to see if it helps!
No need to drape anything! They will be fine.

Quote: I just put the thermometer in there to see how warm it was getting because it didn't feel all that warm to my hand when I checked it out. Do you think in a room that's 63° it would be ok?
The safety of it and lower electric usage is what I got it for. I will be using it with large fowl breeds this time.
Edited to add: I see your reply above. Thanks!
I use one. It never occurred to me to check the temp underneath. I haven't had any issues.Anyone here using the Brinsea Ecoglow brooder heater???
I've got one and have it set up to put my just hatched chicks in once the rest of the eggs are done. I set it up and put a thermometer under it. I have it on the lowest height and the temp under it is only 86°. Is that what other people are getting with them too?? Is that warm enough? I'm used to the 95° that you should set up for with the lamp.

I forgot to mention that a lot of people think they help with leg problems too. I have to say that I agree. I helped a chick out that had pipped at the bottom, and he had leg problems. 3 days under the ecoglow and the little guy was zipping along like he never had a problem. No braces, sitting in cups or anything!
Bye the was, the ecoglow has convinced me that we keep chicks way to hot with big old red lights.
Quote: It is a contact heater--the chicks make contact with it, so if it was too hot it would burn them. They are supposed to be warm to the touch on the under side. The top stays fairly cool.
I have read threads where people did not like them because the brooder did not go up to 95 degrees. In a 50 degree garage, the brooder will be well 50 degrees....It's funny to watch them zip under the ecoglow and the zip back out to get food and water. They soon stay out most of the time though.
Lost my NYD hatched duckling in the night. I'm not sure it was eating.I did get a new chicken chick out. Cornish cross baby. Hopefully my shipped eggs do well.![]()
