4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

;( I lost my two breeding Japanese bantams last month. So upset! I'm Japanese bantamless!
That stinks! what happened???
Super excited! Awaiting Basque, Olandsk Dwarf, BLRW, Silkies, Wheaten Marans, and maybe a few more TJ's since my current batch is 100% viable TJ's (only 5 eggs)
oh NO! more breeds? I cant have them I cant!! Olandsk Dwarf??? even sounds cool!!
Quote: CPL thats just awesome!!

pssss.... Harmony is getting so excited... her 4 eggs from BHep made it to lockdown yesterday, and the ones from you are on day 8 I think, we candled last night a few have nothing and some are growing, I didnt pull the clears though so I will have a better count next week. The silks air cells are weird so far I see nothing in them.... Harmony is too cute, she was candling the serama and alot of the eggs are pretty round and she cant tell which end is which and she was talking to them!!! ... little momma hen! Thanks again!

Ok guys n gals....I've had this chick pipped and chirping since last night round 7...nothing has changed. Do I wait or go in the steams bathroom and help it out? I usually know which ones to help but I'm on the fence about this one

Ho do you incubator Duck eggs? Right now I have them at 72 humidity and 99 temp.
You will drown them if they stay at this humidity level.

Temp 99.5-101 is perfectly safe

humidity needs to be low so they can loose moisture during incubation. 72% is a typical lockdown humidity level. We are in FL and run a "dry" incubation because of our relative humidity. so we keep day 1-25 at 30% or less and lock down at 70-80%

Good morning! Wow, 242 chicken, quail, duck (no emus) hatchers signed up! I needed to know the number so I could enter a guess for the number of eggs set. I thought I'd make a nice algebraic equation based on a standard curve, figuring some nuts, er enthusiastic hatchers would set 100 or more eggs and some would only have a few and the majority would fall around a bators worth. Then I realized I flunked algebra and had no idea how to do that, so I plucked a number out of thin air and wished I'd paid more attention in school.

I'd say 12 hours is not unusual and that if you are on the fence about helping, you should wait and give it some more time.

A good rule of thumb is to wait 24 hours after the external pip before helping. Each situation is different, so I would need a bit more information, but from what you give me, I'd give it a couple more hours. Good Luck!

I would probably help a little as it may be too big to turn and complete the zip. You can carefully pick off the edges of the shell and check the membrane to make sure there are no veins before you peel it back. If you still see signs of blood it's too soon. Good luck!
