4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

Well, to be honest, all you can do for packing is keep them from breaking, there really isn't much more a person can do, as the damage inside, like loose air sacks, comes from how rough the package was handled. The post office guys throw the boxes, play catch with 'em, and drop em all the time. That's just something you can't do anything about except hope! The other thing people speculate on is that perhaps if they are traveling by airplane, the eggs might not take to the plane pressurization well. Hopefully, yours didn't get too mishandled and are fine. I think out of 12, I got 4 loose air bubbles, but I'm giving them time to settle so I hope they will hatch anyway :D
Thanks, that gives me a little more hope! None were broken, and she did include 2 extras. They didn't have to travel too far either. They came from Ohio.

grrr.. I forgot to call the post office to tell them to hold my package. By the time I called, it was already out of delivery. I seem to get better eggs when I pick them up from the post office myself, delivery must be rough. They should arrive in an hour, here's hoping for the best!

I got my ebay eggs today. She didn't wrap them super well, so I have low expectations. They were each wrapped in one layer of small bubble wrap, then put into an egg carton which she just surrounded with newspaper... that's it. I don't have a candler yet, (and wouldn't know what to look for anyway) so I will just set them all on Tue. and candle them on day 10 and see what is up then.

I am also picking up some mixed chicks locally tomorrow, so I will have a much better chance at hatching something at least. It will be my first hatch, so I want to make sure we at least get a few fuzzies out of the deal. I do hope at least a couple of these eggs hatch though, as I don't have any silkies yet.

You don't need an actual candler. Just go into a dark room and shine a flashlight into the large end of the egg. A good egg will have a round air pocket that doesn't move in the large egg of the egg. A dislocated air cell will move around if you move the egg. A ruptured air cell may appear as multiple bubbles and will move all the way up through the egg if you turn it so the small end is up. Dislocated air cells can sometimes reattach and eggs have decent chances of developing. Eggs with ruptured air sacs don't have much of a chance..

Alright, sorry for the slight OT, but I have 4 Marans eggs that are going to drive me to drink. They started peeping last night at about 10pm, and spent ALL NIGHT just peep peep peep peeping to each other. Which was unawesome because the incubator is in our bedroom due to temperature stability of the room.

As of 7:30 this morning, still no pips on any of them. Still chatting away with each other though. Now I'm starting to worry that they can't get out. I've never had eggs spent this long 'talking'. I keep telling them to 'get on with it!' but no dice.

If I see at 3pm there are still no pips, should I poke an airhole in their shells? I really really want these babies to make it.If there is no external I would at least start with that airhole in the top..... good luck!!
oh here is that link.... https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/hatching-eggs-101 BUT REMEMBER TIME TIME TIME, just establish clear beak breathing and let them do their thing!!

I have mine wired in with the light to come on when the thermostat kicks on and it goes off with the light. Should i rewire it to stay on all the time?It is a box fan.it looks like a computer fan but way bigger.I tried the computer fans with a 12 volt charger but burnt up 2 so i borrowed the box fan from my BIL. Thanks for taking time to read and anwser my questions.
On another note i think my duck eggs i set for nyd hatch will not make it.My temps are fine during the day but it was down when i got up this morning to 90.
