4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

Editing because my names weren't entirely Christmassy:

Alpine (hot chocolate and peppermint schnapps) it probably has a real name but that's what I call it.

Amaretto

Snickerdoodle (not Christmassy to most people but I only make them at Christmas so they are Christmassy to me)
Snickerdoodle is adorable!!!
Pizzelle are italian cookies that color that my mother only makes during the holidays.

Yea, my amaraucana bleeds like someone cut her head off if she breaks one of her stomach feathers
Okay I will check that out since everyone is now bedding it will be easier than chasing all over the yard.
I am so frustrated, between my husband turning on the heater for the house last night and my thermometer being weird... I have way to much fluctuation in temperature to make me happy. I need to get this down by Tuesday because after the eggs are in, the most I want to "interfere" is with a blanket on top if it should suddenly get really cold. Ugh!

I missed something, what's with the egg pictures, Janelle? You do have a lovely blue there, pretty!
Cluck -cluck do you have a closet you can put it in, temp should stay steadier that way. I have a two small tables in my closet and run to bators in there at all times the heater doesn't effect them there.
Yikes!! I had to read 20++ pages to catch up with all the chatting!

Cold weather has struck here. Today's high is 40 something F, tonight there is a 30% chance of snow, and the temperature is supposed to be 21 degrees!!! Buurrrr!! My ducks usually sleep in a run at night time, as we haven't started on their coop(s) yet. Hmmmmm...trying to figure out where on earth I'm going to put them all! Ack!

20 pages isn't nothing, I woke up this morning after going to bed early to 25 pages behind. 40* is nice for us, my pyr just pants when it is that warm I will feel sorry for her this summer. Now that 21* stinks. I bet you birds aren't liking it. My stupid male turkey is still sleeping in the trees, the girl figured out that it is warmer with the chickens. He was out in the rain last night 26* I keep thinking I'm going to find him frozen to the limb. Both turkeys have grown all these little down feathers on there heads, really cute, I think they are insulators.

Quote: Agree, it does look like your eggs are upside down.
Here is my water bucket w/heater...

I have a heat lamp in the coop, so that is why eberything is red...

This is the heater. I pulled it out of the bucket to get a picture...

It was extrememly easy to make. I took a 5 gallon bucket and drilled 4 holes in the bottom. The only tricky part is you need a very rare and expensive drill bit for the size that the nipples require. I ordered the nipples from Coops & More. WAY cheaper than any other place I found them. Their website has a video showing how to install them. Then I hung the bucket and put the heater in... Pretty simple actually.
Love it, there is a contest for the kind of thing. I think I will try that, since we are no longer using ours for the duck pond (no more ducks)
Time out on chick pics for the contest please. We're having a discussion of the chairs.
Thank you

I gave up, LOL, I only go back 3 pages, and go from there when I get the chance to sit down, LOL
I asked a couple pages earlier about how some of my eggs appeared porous after sitting for a day or two and wondered what people had to say about their hatch-a-bility. Blarneyeggs, posted a page back also asking but no one has said anything. So i was providing pictures to help people understand what I was saying.

And yes my lovely EE eggs, but since i only have ONE laying since they take FOREVER to start i only have 3 EE eggs to set!
Ah, must have been behind my 3 page limit,

I would go ahead and set them. They look clean and just because they're thin doesn't mean they WILL get bacteria inside... Just keep an eye on those that are a bit thin, and if you see weird dark spots (not the embryo's eyes) then maybe toss those as they could explode.........
Why do your eggs look upside down , its sapose to be Fat end up right ?
Some people turn them 180 degrees during storage (big side to small side up) because they feel it keeps the yolk centered better. So I think it should be ok, though I'm just turning mine a little side to side 'cause I have some loose air cells........

.......
Yah, good idea. I have read it many times, but never put the 'bator in a closet, but I think I will do that now.. gotta clear out a spot first... LOL Really want a successful hatch this time around!
It was on the ground in the run, like it was running down hill, except there isn't a hill, so maybe it was a spray.
Ugh, wish I could help you, and wish the subject of blood didn't make me feel so queasy!

Seriously hope the problem is found and resolved and that your birds stay healthy!

These are pictures of my eggs to show what i mean by porous, maybe no one knows:idunno
It is most evident in my dorking eggs (poster) and my icelandic's which have the lightest coloured shells. My bator will be full by tomo but I don't want to put in bad eggs. Should i put them im anyways.

My Olandsk Dwarf eggs look very porous also, but they will go on lockdown Tuesday and they are all growing strong. The original eggs that I hatched my current pair from were the same. I think it may be the eggs of certain breeds that look that way. ?
