4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

So, did anyone else atempt a day 1 candle? I just can't keep away from them.

I did at two, and three days... :D I've never done this before.... so I really don't know what I'm looking for exactly.... and they are dark eggs mostly... but all I see is a dark blob on one side of the egg, and I can see where a bubble is. :)

I candled the duck eggs on day seven, after snapping a picture of the eggs for the "how many set" contest (though I need to update it now). I also candled the rest of the eggs again (from other hatches) just to show my brother the different stages of ducklings and chicks, and found that I had lost one of my ducklings that was due next week. :( At least it was educational, to show my brother how I could tell that it was dead (he was pretty shocked that I could tell that it was dead, when he couldn't figure out what was going on in there).

The serama eggs confirmed why I don't pull eggs from the incubator even if they show no signs of development on the first candle or two (depending on how hatch crazed I am, I'll candle at 3 days, 7 days and then every few days after, or sometimes I will only candle on day 7 and when they are moved to the hatcher, and sometimes only when I move to the hatcher). Anyways, I had six serama eggs developing and a clear egg on day 4, since they were shipped eggs, but the next time I candled, the one clear egg had a little pink blob in there. They're all developing strongly now. :D

Celtic ~ can one raise geese and ducks together? I know ducks and chickens shouldn't mix.

I don't see why not. I have ducks, turkeys and chickens all together. My two smallest chickens (silkie mixes), the ducks and the turkeys all stick in one group, and the turkeys protect the tiny chickens as if they were their own. You do have to be careful of blackhead with turkeys mixing with chickens, but my flock here is all clean.

I candle when I set them to see the condition of the air cell. The Marans eggs I set yesterday are so dark you can't even see the air cell! With eggs that dark, you often can't tell if they are developing until they get noticeably darker after 10 days or so. With lighter eggs it is so much easier to see what is going on in them.

I hope this is where we post the pics for the celebrity look a like contest. All the new threads this year for the contests is really confusing.
This is my serama Angel, who I am entering as a Lady Gaga lookalike.

I've never had goslings before, but all 14 of my geese got along fine together, until the ganders decided they wanted to start crippling the ducks, by holding them under water and biting them; so now they are all separated. Now the ducks and chickens have decided they hate each other's guts so they are fighting non stop. *sigh* This morning one of my Muscovy girl started a fight with one of the Basque hens and just clung on to her tail end and wouldn't turn loose. The Muscovy girl walked away with a bill full of feathers, which I had to pry from her mouth. Naughty girl!
