You're going a great job! Hang in there!

are peacocks hard to house?
do they eat too much?
how much space per bird?
haha sorry ill google :p

do you sell the eggs?
lol.png
I have my trio of juvenile peas in a 10' x 10' x 6' chainlink run with a tarp over the top. I plan to expand it. At night time they're sleeping in shelter on the ground. They do not eat very much, for their size. I've fed them Gamebird crumbles, chick starter, whole oats, Flock Raiser..however they've done the best on the Gamebird crumbles. Not sure on space, the more the better. Right now my peacock is small, but once he starts getting his train in he'll take up alot more space. I will in the future.

Its all your fault Aspen :p
Oh, I feel so loved!

Phewy! Been working all day while all of you have chatted on here. Humph! Oh, there are three ducklings now!! The latest one that hatched is yellow. So adorable! I have pictures and will post them soon...promise.

He has these tiny tiny tantrums like an Englishman. I imagine him with a little post it he holds up that says " I'm miffed" . Then he solves everything. You can tell what an exceptional teacher he is.
My problem is my German temper and I hold grudges forever. (And no, I'm not proud of that)

I wish I was still a teacher but some evil woman had other plans. I thought a house fell on her and Dorothy threw water on her sister but I guess not.

Now, back to your normally scheduled hatch-a-long.

You may post broody pictures here but I'd also like them in the thread.

I have 25 acres, but my chickens have to share it with my 9 horses, 6 dogs, 5 cats, etc...  I would be dangerous if I moved to a bigger property!!  I would actually LOVE to have more land, but this is the place my (late) husband grew up on, and I just built my dream barn, so I'm not going anywhere...

(I still can't get used to calling him my "late" husband...  After almost 3 years, he's still just my husband...  :hit )

Hugs

Lovely...but I don't think I can keep up with one, much less multiple chat threads!!
My peacock is dying to show off his new set of head feathers that is coming in!

He's lovely!! I have a pair of Purple Black-Shoulders from Deerman (bless his peace) and a BS hen and a pied cock. Ducky Deerman (named for Burt) is getting his 3rd year train now and I'm just awe-struck. They live high up in the trees over the field where I have my acre of breeding pens & runs. I'm going to have to figure out how to get the girls to lay in a reasonable spot again next year...
Ugh, I candled but I don't see anything yet :( I hope that's not the case! I did start out really slowly the first day. I didn't get it to 99 degrees until the second day, when I put a blanket on it deciding it wasn't gonna get there otherwise. It suddenly got cold this week and all my planning was for not! Now I've been keeping a blanket on the incubator and it's been running pretty smoothly. I just hope they're only a little behind and that I'll see some veins tomorrow??
The biggest problem I'm seeing is that your blanket may inhibit the air circulation if you are using a styrofoam incubator. Also, where do you have your thermometer sitting, and is it just one? Take a look at the link in my signature for a good, cheap thermometer to use- and get 3 that all read the same thing in the store so you know they're consistent with each other. Put them between the eggs at 'yolk height' if you can. That will give you close to an accurate reading of the inside of the eggs.

You can still cover the incubator, but if it is a styrofoam, make certain there is good air flow under it and out the top small holes. Maybe cover it in books, leaving the holes between volumes? Alternatively, put your incubator on top of something warm, like your computer. You can also put other things inside to increase the mass that is heated, such as baby food jars of warm water, etc. This will make the temperature far less likely to rise or fall easily, due to heat ballast.

Am I fired?

Only in the sense that you're tempered by fire, fine sir. Hosting this is a special honor, and dubious at that!! It takes a special kind of BYCer!!

this is the most active thread in the last 24 hours.

...imagine that...a hatchalong....BUSY!?!?!?

You still deserve a brand new lazy boy recliner and a lifetime supply of rum for putting all this together and putting upwith us all

Mmmmmm...nothing like a big batch of fresh egg nog from our own eggs...stiffened up a bit!

Mine are on the loose now, but started in a 25' x 30' run with avian netting over the top after I moved them. They have to settle-in to a new location over a number of months or they'll take a hike, never to return. I have tall trees for them to roost in, or the bobcats would be a problem, but when they fly 50-60' up, it's past what those cats are willing to do to get a meal. When it's particularly nasty they might choose to go into the turkey coop (10' x 10' x 7') but that was their old coop so they are comfy in there. I'm thinking of building them a treehouse so they don't have to get rained & snowed upon.

Heh...as if we'll ever get precipitation again in the midwest.

Yes! More eggies in my doorstep! Checked them all and out of 16 I have one little crack (repairable) and 5 clearly detached air cells. I will let them warm up before they go in later tonight. When is the cutoff for setting eggs? Do I need to take a new pic with the final total? Thanks!
