4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

I have been putting off candling my eggs. All but one of the 48 are shipped eggs and I don't generally have real good luck. I had one egg explode after only 6 days in the bator so I guess I better take a look as I don't want a bunch of stinkers making more of a mess.

I found free range eggs at the grocery store! So of course I bought a dozen. I'll crack 2 of them open tonight to see if they are fertile, if one is, I'll put the other eggs in the incubator.

I wasn't going to log in today, but w/ all the bad weather around the country (tornado in AL, blizzards w/ pile ups, 6 inches of rain & wind well over 70mph all night at my place w/ temp to go below freezing tonight). I thought I would pop in to say "Ya'll be careful out there, esp. if you are driving in any of this nasty weather!".

(Our power flickered several times, but stayed on for the NYDH bator, as did our roof shingles so all good here)

Hope you & your flocks are all safe & warm :)

Eep! I haven't had one explode yet, but one of my Ameraucana eggs was rotten when I pulled it =/ hate it when that happens!
Let us know how the candling goes! I used all shipped eggs and I'm down to 21/60 remaining

OH NO! Chicken math has struck! I've just bought more eggs... and my first hatch isn't even HATCHED yet. XD
What kind of eggies did you get??
OK, I'm skipping 20 pages again

I had a Scovie baby hatch yesterday & now have quail hatching this morning. NOT going to be fun to move a bator fulla hatching eggs & a brooder fulla newly hatched babies an hour & a half away tonight. Please pray for safe travels for my babies & that they don't get too cold.
PICTURES!!!! What kind of quail? Where are you having to move them to?
Good morning everyone.

What's going on inside our chicken eggs-Day 9

From-Egg-to-Chicken-9.jpg

Day 9: Starting to look like a chick. You can see the wings and legs really taking shape.
The body and head are becoming more proportional.

Good for you! I plan on selling all the chicks, ducklings, and maybe some of the quail babies. How much does everyone sell their baby chicks (or any feathered babies) for? I usually sell my chicks for about $4.00 each. I sold my ducklings for $8.00 each, and they were mixed. I sold peachicks last year for $35.00 each..however after doing some research that is WAY too cheap. Any hatchery you go to sells them for about $47.00+ each. Looking forward to hearing what everybody else gets for their hatchlings. : )

I am selling RIR chicks right now for $2 each, and BCM chicks for $5 each. I had some mixed chicks but sold all those for $2 each. Right now chicks on CL are running about $3 a chick. I like to keep my prices low so I don't have to hold on to them for long, plus I am farther out than most people so people don't like to drive out here as much. The ducks I have ready to hatch (rouen, Indian runners, and mixes of the 2) I am going to sell $5 for the females and $4 for the males. No one is selling ducklings right now so I can't compare prices, but in the spring/summer they tend to sell for $3-$6 each.
In my area the is nobody that has rare chickens, just hatchery stock. Now, some people want that and could care less about all my francy breeds, but some just have a fit over them and are willing to pay higher prices. I sold 8 mixed barnyard chicks for $4.00 each. My prices are going up this year, feed is too expensive! We're paying almost $15.00 for a bag of Scratch...yikes!
so people do buy in winter months!
Yep!
I got an email this morning that someone wants to buy the rest of my chicks (21 of them). I will be happy and sad, because I won't have anymore until NYD, but at least it will give me more space. I just have to enjoy the ducklings until then. I'm not sure if they will really come or not because they have emailed me several times over the past several weeks and never set a time to get any. We shall see.
I home the person will come pickup all your babies you need to move out to make room for MORE! = )
I WISH I got $5 for ducklings and $4 for chicks!!! Silkies and the like can be sold for $5 per chick, but any of the layer breeds, you're lucky to sell them at $2, and you're extremely lucky to get a buck per mixed chick. :/ Ducklings, well, they're typically $3, or $2.50. We live in an agricultural area, so why they don't sell for more...? Maybe because the amish raise and sell for dirt cheap... Still though.
Yikes, that is cheap for the time, money, and feed you put into them!
ducklings are priced as straight run ($7 & $9/each depending on breed) and sexed ($9 & $11/each)
chicks are priced based on breed $7 - $35 each
Goslings are $40 - $80 each

this all newly hatched pricing and goes up with age. Fall juvenile geese get priced based on quality/parentage

I'm going to try my hand at sexing ducklings, when the NYD batch hatches.
You have an old Golden? I've put down one, and just lost a Golden to the most weirf/friekish accident ever, right in front of me. My old boy, we put down..he loved the snow! So did my last boy..so glad I got pictures of him last month playing in the last snow we got..which was a lot. He loved looking for the ball I would throw, it would disappear in the snow, he would find it. There was one place..one place! In that darn fence. There was a pointed fence cap on one of the posts, instead of the round kind. I was in the yard part with my smaller dog, I could hear my Golden..Toby, jumping up on the fence like he has soo many times, I heard a whimper, then a thud. I turned, and knew as soon as I saw him, he was gone. He had broken his neck, just that quick. I've heard of these things happening..but my goodness, not to me, not if front of me. It was so sad. I love Goldens, need a Golden in my life as long as I can care for them. He was so well behaved, trained. Everyone that met Toby couldn't believe how well behaved he was. They are so willing to please. I am going to post a lot of pics now of all of my Goldens. Good luck with your old guy Sweetly! Post pictures of yours!

My first boy, Grizz, he was getting old, just a year before we My Grizz'a last winter, he loved the snow too..
put him down. He got tumors all over him, couldn't hardly
walk a year later..it was time.

Loved this big boy..he was not overweight at close to 80 lbs!

This is my Toby that just had that horrible accident last month.

Too young to die at just 3 and a half years old. Loved this guy!

My new girl.. Missy, and yes, she is pure. I will be asked a number of times throughout her life. She was the only one in the litter
that had the white. It can happen, but of course, not showable..I
don't care to show. She is precious. My first female Golden!

Wanting my Brody to come back and play, but my little Doxie
does not like the snow quite as much as she does. :D
Looking forward to a long life with this little girl.
So pretty!

Yeah!!
Thanks! That's our Christmas card photo this year :)
Let's see- Straight Run day to week-olds sell for $5 each. Started pullets go for $10-15 and if you buy 4, I give ya a roo for free if you want one. These are my FBCM and OE chicks.

When I get my rarer breeds going, I will be selling for 20+ each as day olds (auto-sexing) and more as starteds. People in town can have 6 hens here, and they like to know they're getting hens, so I foresee no issues with that pricing.

I also barter. I've traded chickens for other animals or things we need. Works great, and everyone is happy :) I haven't sold ducklings yet, but I'm getting two Juvie Muscovy girls for $12/ea on Saturday. And it's snowy here! They are pretty colors, though- so I couldn't resist :)
Yeah it makes me want to make sure I get a no-freeze pump out there in the spring for sure. Aw ty :)
I'm glad you can get those type of prices in your area! : ) What does everyone keet for Guinea Keets? I get $5-$6.00 each for Pied and Pearl keets, and $8.00 each for Chocolate, Royal Purple, etc.
UPDATE on bator A = COOLERBATOR
12 pipping some out resting
and here is the brooder already!! WOW

Daww!
I sell them $9 each straight run or $11 each if I vent sex them. Waterfowl can be gender ID'd through vent sexing.Unlike chickens they have a penis (drakes).

I miss mine too! Animal Control got me....

They should be fertile as soon as they start covering the Hens. Of course, that can take several weeks of Dancing and Courting...
lau.gif
Was yours covering the Hens? If so, collect the eggs for two weeks and throw them in the bator!

I bet you will have offers of many Roos by the end of the day if you want a replacement for your mean one...
I would sugget bringing an adult chicken(s) into your flock. I've done that and brough in diseases and lost more birds than I care to mention. Save yourself the blood, sweat and tears and only get hatching eggs! I refuse to buy chicks or adult chickens for anybody, after what happened. I do not want to risk it.
I saw a youtube video on it and it looks fairly easy (much easyer than chicks). I will try it out after all the eggs hatch out.
X2
I was trying to take pics of my beautiful blue sept babies and all they did was want to peck me and the camera!! stinkers!!!
so I threw some crack down and this is what I got then.... I cant wait till ALL their feathers are in!!! YAY!!

and my big beautiful roo... hard to believe they hatched sept!!

CPL WE NEED A FLUFFY BUTT PIC CONTEST TOO!!! LOL
Fluffy!

Finger's crossed you have lots of eggs developing!!

I candled the other day and took out 31 eggs, 27 chicke, 2 duck, and 2 quail.

In the incubator I still have: 51 Chicken, 8 Quail, and 48 Duck.
