4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

Well I decided to throw the dozen of "free ranged" eggs into the incubator. Has anyone had any luck with them before? I've never seen eggs cartons makred fertile and these are the first ones that I've seen marked free ranged. I have always wanted to hatch eggs from the store....

On a second note, I see movement in 6 of my NYD eggs and I have 2 that are too dark to see in. I can't believe I'm down to 8. I also put in 3 dozen of eggs from the nieghbors that I didn't count as part of the hatch along. They had 2 roosters, but not one of the eggs were fertile so they all went to the dogs, what a waste.

I broke open the 5 clear silkie eggs, and one egg that we thought was a bit stinky. (I was right, I got it out of the house quick after I broke it... I just wanted to be sure I was right. I won't bother cracking those open again.

) It looks like 4 of the silkie eggs were infertile, and the other died right away.
I have 7 eggs all together that I am sure are developing, and the rest I am not sure of.

on your eggs, hope they all make it to hatching!
Had to toss another egg tonight. a bloodring.Leaves me with 10 eggs a couple im not sure about.
Ugh, sorry, hope the others develop!

I guess I can't keep myself from taking a nightly peek. I still have 4 going and wiggling. I am really hoping nothing goes wrong between now and hatch time! I think I have the humidity a little too high these last 2 days when I added a bit too much water. Went from 28% to 55%. Hoping it will start going down soon! At least I did weigh them before setting so I can check to see what percentage they're losing toward the end and anticipate problems accordingly!

Also, I have a question with humidity. I had eggs shipped to me in which some were set when they were 12 days old and I also set eggs that were only 1 - 2 days old from the nieghbor. The shipped eggs have huge air sacs because they are older and probably delt with low humidity conditions during shipping. My neighbor's eggs air sacs are smaller since they were in the incuabtor almost right away. Does anyone have an idea for compromise between the 2 for correct humidity levels?

REALLY??? yay!! i LIKE scovy noises lol
I 2nd that Sally! I just adore my Scovies!
They will lay a good sized egg too! Congrats on taking them in. Our 6 live with a 4H family who have geese from us also and wanted a pet flock of ducks. Was a perfect fit.
Aww, how sweet!

Sooooooooo something interesting has come to light.

Remember this week me talking about or Sebastopols and their down?

seems SOMEONE ran to Facebook, posted a photo of some poor goose (who isnt ours) who had been plucked bare and bloody and claimed it was a picture of one of my birds.

I DONT HARVEST DOWN FROM OUR GEESE. I mearly said it can be done, and can be done without butchering the geese. It does NOT make them bare and bloody if done properly. It is controversial, but has been done for centuries with geese living for 20+ years.

Please remember we live in FLORIDA, and our photos reflect that we live in FLORIDA and I watermark everyone one of my photos very specifically and wouldnt be easily reproduced.

silly people, always someone wanting to spread rumors.
OH NO! I am so sorry this happened, Shellie!

Shame on them, who ever they are!

It's sleet here. I had to scrub brush the entire porch and walkway so G could come home without killing himself on the steps.
Currently, there is one duckling out, one partially zipped, one that's more pip than zip, but it's getting somewhere, plus six seramas (two white, two lighter brown, one darker brown and one blue, and at least one is feather legged!) and one more making its way out. :D

NYD is going to be HECTIC! I only have one tray that's been devoted to NYD hatch, but that's still a lot, especially with some swap eggs that are an assortment. I'll probably have to turn the turner off and use a tray or two extra as hatching trays, plus baskets to seperate!
Congratulations on the duckling!! I pray you have a wonderful hatch on the rest of the egglets.
Ducky video :)
Loved the video, thanks for sharing honey!

Yeah on the movement!! I was going to candle my eggs again tonight, but after cleaning 3/4ths of the duck pen, the goose house in the garden, moving a rooster to a different pen, feeding the three pens of geese...all the ducks and chickens, gathering and marking eggs, hauling and lifting all day...I just didn't feel up to it!
