4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

I think I'll try this idea too - separating the hatchlings from the unhatched. You could separate each section as well.

Now that I think about it tough ... we aren't really supposed to open the bator when they are hatching so this might not work.

I'm still contemplating my brooder ... I'm torn between using an old cabinet, an old dresser or just going the easy route and using a large wire dog crate (no shortage of those here with 9 dogs!). I may just use my daughter's old guinea pig cage for the first few days and keep them on the kitchen table (we never eat there anyhow) and then graduate them to a larger unit. There is a beautiful example of old window recycling on a brooder thread here on BYC that really piqued my interest too, but I think I'd like wire that I can insert plexi over instead. So many ideas floating around! My peeps will have to be indoors until at least April/May when it warms up enough to put them outdoors so I need a fairly good sized, easy to keep clean place to keep them. I contemplated using my puppy pen, but I have a litter planned to whelp in March so that won't work.

Guinea Pig Cage!!!!! I never even thought of that! I have 3 rabbit/guinea pig cages that we aren't using... I would have to put plexiglass on the sides, though... Hmmmmm... They are already on built in stands with wheels, and I have already cat-proofed one of them..... Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Sooo....a point of knowledge that has nothing to do with chickens....
NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER buy a 6 yo and an 8 yo pottery wheels for Christmas....and DON'T apparently let them play with these indoors. As per my artist friend...these are OUTSIDE toys...and looking at my dining room, kitchen, living room and bathroom....well..I tend to agree. Of course I'm having guests for dinner on Sunday and a dinner party on Tuesday......shoot me now!
My grandmother got my 9 yr old daughter a pottery wheel for Christmas. She gave out all the Christmas presents on Thanksgiving since she was headed to Florida the next weekend. Luckily, my kids are destructive.

They burned the motor out of the wheel messing with it before they even really got to use it the 1st time. Therefore, all clay had to be molded by hand. Much less mess this way. I tossed the dead pottery wheel in the trash yesterday when my daughter wasn't looking. THANKS GRANNY!!!

My mystery NYD hatch eggs came early, here is a picture of my new quail! How cute are they! Out of the 6 eggs all 6 hatched!!
I have my 2 other mystery NYD eggs OEGB just hatch and 7 out of the 12 mystery ducks hatched. I am waiting on 5 more! I will post pictures of them when I move them to the brooder. I think they are Khaki Campbells! The little OEGB are adorable!

I have my babies in an old bird cage (very similar to a bunny or guinea pig cage) that's all wire & has a pan underneath. I just sit my heat lamp on top & point it down. There's even a perch in there if they want closer to the lamp or just up off the wire floor. Clean-up is so much easier. Just slide the pan out every couple days & dump it. If it's a bit chillier where the cage is sitting (I did have it in the barn, now it's in the basement) I tie feed bags around back & sides & drape an old towel over the top & front, just not touching the lamp on the top. It even has the little doors & feed/water cups already in place. I never have to go fishing in the cage to try to grab bowls. I just slide the little door up, pull the bowls out, fill & replace. They attach right to the side of the cage in front of the little slider doors. I also don't have to worry about escapees when I open the door. It's also a slider & has a door within a door that slides as well. I only have to lift the door far enough to get my arm in. This works best for newly hatched babies, just a few older babies, a pair/trio of Serama or OEGB, or 4-5 quail. It also works especially well for young ducklings & solves the wet mess problem allowing chicks & ducklings to be brooded together until the ducklings get too much bigger than the chicks. All of the water drains through the wire into the pan below & you simply dump it as needed instead of replacing a ton of bedding constantly. The regular chick feeders & waterers also fit in there pretty well. As long as you open the slide door completely they will just fit through the door.

You're welcome! I think it's funny, all 6 that I shipped to you hatched & only 2 of the 6 I set myself hatched. I lost both of mine within 24 hours trying to move them to my new house an hour & a half away. The male for at least 1/2 of those eggs is a jumbo, so babies may end up being a bit on the big side for a Coturnix. Not a bad thing though. Just don't be surprised if some of them end up being a good bit bigger than the others. I need pix of the OEGB too if those were mine as well.

You can get really ghetto with Guinea Pig cages (like I do) and just drape towels along the sides to seal out drafts. Tada! It's a brooder n stuff!

This has been a crazy hatch!!! The night after Christmas we lost power. Our generator was down at the barn and the live power line was blocking our driveway. I was so upset about the eggs in the incubator that I contemplated driving over the live power line and trying to find some place to plug in the incubator like maybe a hotel lobby. Then my husband had a brilliant idea, start the Durango and plug in the incubator. I had completely forgotten the Durango had a regular110 plug outlet. So for the next 4 hours, the incubator ran in the Durango. Very long and stressful night. The incubator seems to be running great so I am hoping for a great hatch!! Getting so excited. Good luck everyone!

Oh boy, I've had to take bators out to a car before, but, they had their own plug ins that work with the cigarette lighters. I now only have the still air bators, and they don't have that..so, just showed this to my DH! He says, we need to do that! Yep. :))
