4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

You're welcome! I think it's funny, all 6 that I shipped to you hatched & only 2 of the 6 I set myself hatched. I lost both of mine within 24 hours trying to move them to my new house an hour & a half away. The male for at least 1/2 of those eggs is a jumbo, so babies may end up being a bit on the big side for a Coturnix. Not a bad thing though. Just don't be surprised if some of them end up being a good bit bigger than the others. I need pix of the OEGB too if those were mine as well.

Thank you!! The OEGB are yours too! Only 2 made it past candling but boy are they cute. I plan on moving them to the brooder in the morning and I will take some pictures.

Oh man. I moved out to a 52 acre farm in the middle of nowhere 3 months ago, we rented a long trailer and kept the chickens and turkeys in the coops (4 of them then), it was an hour and a half trip too, I thought for sure we would give them all heart attacks! The poor turkeys were pale like ghosts when they arrived. The baby chicks rode in the cats carriers. It was a nightmare moving!

These are my first quail, I really like these guys no matter what size and wow are they FAST! they all remind me of chipmunks so i named them all Alvin. I have no idea who is who anyway!
Do you release yours at some point? I was reading most people raise them to release them and then to hunt them. I was thinking of just keeping them for myself, is that wrong? Would you build them a coop or with 6 just keep them inside or try adding them to a small flock of chickens outside?

Guinea Pig Cage!!!!! I never even thought of that! I have 3 rabbit/guinea pig cages that we aren't using... I would have to put plexiglass on the sides, though... Hmmmmm... They are already on built in stands with wheels, and I have already cat-proofed one of them..... Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
:) Excellent - now you have 3 lovely brooders!
I have my babies in an old bird cage (very similar to a bunny or guinea pig cage)
I thought of that too, but I only have the one my lovebird Jasper is in and I don't think he wants to share!
Snow~! Will it ever stop snowing here? Three days now..again. We had a big storm, then it stopped for a couple of days, now we are getting it again. I don't mind it too much, I am just worried about power, now that it's been talked about! Shovel me a path to the chickens every morning. Pretty as can be out there.
Same kind of weather here. Snow, no snow, snow, no snow. Cold, less cold, colder, almost melting, cold. Winter in northern BC Canada is very variable! We have little habitrails meandering all over the yard in order to get to where we need to for feeding livestock etc. Today it was only -6 celcius, but last week it was -20 celcius and my RIR roosters' combs/wattles froze

It will get a lot colder here yet, before it gets warmer. Not sure how they are going to cope.
On the subject of what to make brooders and such out of, we had an old ferret cage that my brother tossed out after he got a new one. I WAS going to use it as the run for my as of yet un-built serama coop, but dad too it to the scrapyard because I didn't speak up fast enough!

Lesson learned.
Oooo, that would have been a good use for it. Keep your eye on kijiji and other sites.
YAY!!! Recycling & repurposing really saves a lot of money & we can all stand to save some money (especially when the chickens are eating it all

Recycling rox! I have decided, I think, that I will recycle a 3x2' base cabinet from an old kitchen into a brooder that I can also use as a recycling centre in my mudroom when I'm not hatching peeps! I can't wait to get started on it tomorrow! Whoot!
I still cant find the contest about pictures of chickens flapping , hasnt anyone heard of it , is it over?
Here you go: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/728983/nyd-hatch-along-contest-10-flapper-contest

I'm not sure - I don't remember any winners announced either - but I did notice your signature says you have hatch cams! Cool!

I keep my quail & hatch out more eggs. The ones you just hatched will be laying in aprox. 8 weeks. I had 2 little cages with 3 in each but lost a hen last week. Now I have the 5 that are left in 1 cage until I get a few more to add back in. I try to put 2-3 hens with each little male & just let them do their thing. Too many males will result in bald hens & too many hens will result in dead males. I have a friend who converted an old camper into a coop for her quail & she has 20-30 of them just running all over in there. Since it was already wired for electric, this also allows her to provide them with a heater in the winter to keep them laying. Mine were in the barn before moving & are now in the basement. Eventually I'd like to build them a small coop outside or a larger cage in the basement, but for now they are in a small cage in the basement until we get set back up from the move. Quail do NOT fare well being penned with chickens. Chickens can kill them very easily since they are so tiny in comparison.
