4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

I locked down my 6 eggs. Then, I went outside to give fresh water to the chickens. Come inside, my 19 month old boy is standing there holding two of the eggs, incubator wide open.

No eggs where broken- so I sure hope no damage done
Poor baby, maybe he wanted breakfast.

For those using the Genesis 1588 with the toggles(new one adjusts from the top) Here is the method for changing the temp below and above the chicken Range. You can incubate frogs and etc. This way.

THANK YOU!

DS was candling eggs for lock down and one had pipped!! We were hard pressed to get them all back in and the humidity up, didn't think to take a picture, but I can't chance opening bator now!

I still have 14 eggs going strong into lockdown! Amazing for shipped eggs - I started with 16 and 14 are viable for eggs all the way from texas to NY. Might not get 14 chicks, but I am keeping my fingers crossed.. Cmon naked neck babies! =)
That's really super great! Congratulations
That particular competition is impossible, absolutely impossible to choose!
you need to be cold for a nightcap? I just need to be awake.
LOL, I'm such a lightweight, not in lbs, and my husband served wine with dinner. I had one glass over a long period and it did warm me up nicely, but then I start to get woozy a bit, I don't like that, just the warmth, LOL It's kind of sad! I love the taste, just can't take much! (wmipy)
Help me, I am a hatching addict and cant stop setting new eggs! (just set chocolate orp) along with a rack of duck and more goose
Hee hee hee, if I could, I would hatch all the time, there just isn't space here!
What a great idea!! I have been trying to think of a way to calibrate the one digital that I have and this solved it.
Oh, I'm so glad!
Here are the pictures so far of my Mystery NYD swap eggs! (my eggs came early)
I had 6 out of 6 quail hatch!! 2 out of 6 OEGB hatch yesterday morning and this morning when I moved my mystery ducks to the brooder, 2 more hatched. Pictured is 8 of them but 2 more are in the incubator. I can't tell about the remaining 2 eggs, they may have pips. I will post pictures of them tomorrow!! What a great hatch, Thank you silkie sensations and _________?
I think my ducks are Khaki Campbells?

Oh wow, the cutie pictures are starting to roll in, OMG, ducklings are SO CUTE!!! WOW! Love the chipmunks, didn't know they hatched from eggs as well??
Darn BYC and NYD Hatch-a-long.... My one morning I could sleep in and I keep waking from dreams of lockdown!! I kept waking in a panic, because in some of the dreams, people were playing tennis with my eggs! Or I didn't have the right equipment ready..... Oh boy.... I think I need help... I've got it bad.....
ROFL, I was doing that in the beginning. I hope I don't laps back into nightmares here at the finish line!!!

I went downstairs to check my bator, and the temp was 102.4!!!! It was in the 101's last night, so I turned it DOWN. I know I turned it down, I double checked... So why did my temp go UP??? I hope it didn't hurt anything! I'll be pretty bummed if something catastrophic happens this far into the hatch!!

Oh, I hope it's ok!

Am I the only one not getting notifications? WTH
Just checked, I haven't gotten any notifications for a while either........
Not sure if/where we are supposed to post lock down picture, but here are the 38 out of 40 I set.

Wow, great numbers, even for being your own!
Thank you! I did think of that and stuck a glass thermometer in there yesterday. It says 99.5 while my digital says 99. (The digital only gives me whole numbers, and it has said 99-100 steady since the first couple days, except dropping a couple degrees when I would candle, but it goes up fairly quickly.) Next time I will try your idea, too.
The other thing I thought of the last couple days, is that I lined the bottom of my bator with aluminum foil. Could that cause a problem? I wouldn't have thought so at such low temps. It is just plain old foil.

So, next time I am only going to candle 2x. I am glad I did watch them so much this time, though, as I learned a lot, and feel a lot more confident about when they are doing well, if they didn't develop, if they died, ect.
No foil in the bator.
use 2 thermometers.
I think I will also get myself a turner, so they get turned more often, and so I won't be opening the incubator so much

Here is my lone egg going into lockdown. (Thank you Sally for posting the basket idea! It solved that issue for me.)

I found someone who has chicks that are less than a week old. I am trying to decide if I should pick them up now, or wait and see if it hatches. It will have to be alone a couple days anyway, until it is old enough to be put in with the older chicks. The place is an hour away though, and I am going through there today.
You might want to try using a paper towel on top of the wire, it'll make clean up easier, it'll allow air to move through it, and it won't reflect heat too bad??
I have two button pips. I will try to set up the camera in a little while
That'd be awesome. I caught your camera at the end last time, and it was really fun to watch! Had a better view than if I had watched directly as the camera blows it all up nice and big! How fun that was!
I still have to wonder how mother nature gets away without the lock down. It's very cold for these Eagles at hatch time, but still, take a peek at one that's hatched, turn the others, and there it is, one that has pipped or is zipping. They all hatch. I have watched the Decorah Eagles for two years...amazing. I always shook my head when I saw her...or him, get up off of the eggs when there was a pipped egg, and let all that cold air in. ??

Amazing! Do you have a camera set up near where they nest? How fun!
I see all the regulars are in here NICE. I hope everyone is locking down or slowly doing it. I will be locking down my chicks a little later. As I stated a minute again, my neighbors got this pit that they should have never have adopted (as a puppy) I think it still has the fighting instinct, short, stout and mean. Who all has pips anyone. I haven't looked at mine in 1 1/2 weeks other to check temp.
I think I'm going to lock down now, even so it's a little over an hour early. Since there is no rule to that one, LOL. They all looked good last night when I candled. Now it's just a waiting game!
Ok officially candled last night, 39 out of 41 made it to lockdown woot! So 39 eggs were locked down about a half hour ago, I am a little early but I don't think its a bad thing because 4 or 5 of my eggs are rocking like crazy

COOL!

Going into lockdown in a minute.
Gonna do mine now! LOL 1 hour n 15 min early but who cares? LOL

Unless you really do not want chicks I'd get them now if they are an hour away you will need em. ID get 2 , 3 chicks are good.

My broodies keep pipped eggs under them and seem to keep fairly steady humidity. I as really surprised what they do with their feathers.
but but but.... I am busy writing an guide for assisted hatching and WHEN to assist!! I better get er dun!!! but what about contest 3 we are all posting in??? LOL
Chop chop!! autocorrect is mad today apologies if I make no sense.

I see you Jim ;)

I left the window open on my phone while I put eggs into hatching baskets.

I can't tell anybody how many made it to hatching baskets due to contests but it wasa a smaller number than I had hoped for (but it could be a blessing in disguise.
