4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

I thought mine were goners, as we had to set early in the day, 7:00 am, and I still had nothing happening. So I tried someone's suggestion to tap the bator, and we all could hear cheep, cheep, cheep! More patience I guess, better get the brooder ready!:)

Well I am skipping over 900 posts and just wanted to post that the silver pencil rocks I had that went into lock down have all died. One looks like it died about the time the went into lockdown, one was upside down in the shell and died without pipping, and the third is the real puzzler. It is in perfect position, beak lined up right under the air cell, it just never pipped into the aircell. membrane was nice and moist, everything looked good, the chick was just dead.

I am sorry not to hang out, but it so depressing seeing everyone's chicks. I am going to go play with some of my older chicks.

Ill get some new pics to show the upgrades i made to the cooler to make it a hatcher. Mainly I added a wafer thermostat since my digi controller is whats running the ultrabator.

Chick update: silkies are popping right along, and the first bcm is out! The mutts are all trucking along :)

So sorry.....

Yaaaay! I just watched my second baby hatch! He was a trooper, and zipped in under 15 minutes. Right now he's trying to come to terms with a world bigger than 3 inches long, and his older brother is helping out by stepping on him and peeping loudly. Oh siblings. :p

So cute. :D

How do you know to open them now? Isn't it too early to open everything up, even if you don't see movement? How will I know when it has been too long?

Too funny!

So what is this?!?
I candled my last couple eggs that hasn't popped and five just quit on me, one had a freak air sac or blank space like that ( wasn't there on day 18) n I have one last internal pipper I'm cheering for!
Shipped egg? Hate it when they do that.

Yay!

Quick question for ya'll ... can I use shavings for my brooder footing or pelleted bedding?
I like the pellets because they seem less dusty and handle spilled water better. I start out with a layer of puppy pad over top of them until they are a couple days old.
