4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

Wow, as I sit here, right this moment ... not a sound in the house. Hubby went to bed and took 3 of the dogs and a cat. Son is in bed. I put the other 6 dogs to bed, the lovebird is covered and all the peeps are asleep ... for the moment

Funny, I'm on my phone talking to a bunch of chicken addicts on byc, and the ad pops up for 'addiction rehab'
But I don't wanna have rehab, I like my crazy addiction >.<

That's great!
Just lost the little one I thought was so strong... And one started to really slow down its breathing so I took it into the steamed up bathroom to try to,give it more room to breath, but it was too late... I put it back in the incubator because I could still feel the faintest heartbeat, but I can't get it to breathe.... So now I've lost 7, going on 8... I hate this part...
I have to go back to work tomorrow, so I REALLY need to sleep, but I don't want to leave them... There are still 7 chicks in the bator, struggling to hold on... Not that it makes a difference if I help them.... They're dying anyway.
Oh gosh, I'm so sorry! That's just awful!

I really don't know how to help

Bad news / Good news

Bad news - Egg E died
Was very odd b/c I had switched out the hot wet paper towel tents 20 mins earlier and thought all 3 were still acting robust, good strong peeps when I moved them.
Then 20 min. later I heard that high pitched distress peep chicks make, reached in to move the paper towel a little so I could view E, saw an exhail & beak drooped but I just thought sleeping,
I picked it up to see and realized there was no in breath, it had simply died right then. I pulled the shell off - ALL the yolk was absorbed, no sign of it at all, & looked like basically all the vein blood also. Now here is the odd thing I've never heard about - when I flipped the dead chick out of the shell, a tiny drop of GREEN "poop" exited its butt, does green mean infection? it did not smell at all.

Egg B is pushing out of the little bit of shell & membrane & towel tent - it is pretty weak, no were near able to stand.

Egg W is still breathing, but not even trying to exit ...

GOOD NEWS - Egg L (a dark maran x maran) made a faint peep - this egg was 4 inches from the egg that was 103.4 degrees right b/f the bator falling incident.
& I'm doing nothing but watching to see if it will pip externally on its own sometime in the next 24-36...
That's so sad! Ugh, what can I say? I really hope the rest make it out!

I have read every post, through the hatch, I think I've read most of the literature, and yet I have had the most bizarre thing happen today!
We had an egg partially zipped, it had been several hours, and all the mayhem around it, it was still peeping and moving inside the shell.

A couple of chicks jumped up on the partially zipped egg and it CRACKED IN HALF!!! The chick didn't get up, and the shell was still partially attached.
They were running over it, pecking at it, and eventually it cleared the shell, and started moving.

I noticed that it seemed to have a "thin bag of water" attached to it. Later as it tried to move around, I realized it was fluid under it's skin and the skin appeared to be sagging and there were no feathers on that part of the skin. It was like a water balloon, boy the skin is thin! It has been hours, and this poor little thing is still struggling to move, rests more than anything. also that leg is outstretched, the other is curled underneath it's body.

We removed all the chicks to give it a chance. Later, another chick hatched, it has been recovering so it has not bothered the injured chick.

Has anyone ever encountered this? seen this, heard of this? I am not holding out much hope...but tomorrow may bring a miracle.

Thoughts?.....
Thanks, Stephanie
Sounds like two different things?? Just my guess, but , could have spraddle leg (sp?) and the water under the skin, I've read that several times, and it seems to go away on it's own. Just make sure he doesn't get hurt, then look up spraddle leg to see some solutions??
I have 6 hatched out of 54. This was mostly due to hateful post office handling and a few rookie mistakes during lock down. I ended up shrink wrapping some of them on accident. I was able to save one because I thought I should check on him. He externally pipped and stayed that way for over 12 hours. I am glad I checked, but once I did, and I saw the shrink wrap, I knew I had to check the others that did not pip. One after another I tapped and then opened them up to find dead chicks. Once was still alive, but I think in my frantic effort to find his beak, he took a few good breaths and ended up drowning. I feel awful about this but I knew no matter what I did, it would have happened anyway since that one had pipped in the wrong end.

So I have my precious few but they are there. I will have to think of better ways to avoid shrink wrapping in the future. As for my double yolker, they did not make it. There is NO WAY to tell at all when you should help. I waited too long as I did not want to make any mistakes. But that is OK. I got a lot of great data from the microcontroller device I have been developing so that will come in handy. I should have heeded the late night warning that my humidity was getting a bit low. :(

Hope everyone else is having a great hatch!
Ugh, I'm sorry it didn't work out, but glad you saw how your invention faired. I know you will perfect it! Can't wait to hear more about it in the future!
Good Night All! I had to run out to my building for chick starter so I checked on the hatcher and there are two new ducklings out! That makes 10 = D Finger's crossed that I find all the remaing eggs hatched in the a.m.

Nighty Night

3 AM report...

Woke up,about 1/2 hour ago... I'm so tired I can't remember which chicks hatched before, so ill just tell you what is in the bator right now...

1 chick climbing all over.... Strong and seems healthy, thinking about moving it to the brooder soon.
1 chick free of its shell, but dragging the shell guck around behind it. Small umbilical hernia, hasn't gotten in its feet yet, but seems fine
OE chick free of its shell except a tiny yet strong strand of tissue still holding on. Big belly, but all of the yolk is absorbed... Hasn't stood yet.
Mystery chick, fully hatched, but big mushy belly. Seems strong, but can't stand up due to the huge belly!
1 chick that was still in its shell, I helped out some more. Chipped away more shell until she could get her head out, yolk appears absorbed, just waiting for her to be strong enough to free herself. She's a pretty black and white from my flock...
Last chick that pipped on the wrong end... Took more shell off so she could get her head out. Yolk not fully absorbed. She's still in about half her shell, wrapped in a nice warm damp paper towel... She's also a pretty black and white from my flock...
One dead chick. She grew weaker as I was watching last time. I thought she died while I was trying to free her to give her more room to breathe, but she still had a a heart beat, so I put her back in... She didn't make it.

So, as of right how, I have 9 that died, 16 in the brooder, 4 fully hatched of which I'm confident that 3 will live, and 2 still working on hatching...
Not to mention 14 that never made it to lockdown...

Just let it be.  I've done a lot of helping and I've learned my lessons!  You could probably help but you may end up losing it anyway.  Or it may hatch on its own.  Or it may not hatch but if you mess with it, you could definitely lose it... not saying you will but you COULD.  It seems to be more heartbreaking, to me anyway, when I lose the ones I tried so hard to save.

Hello 3 am. :) I woke up to check the chicks and the bator... :)

I have two little guys that are working on hatching... they keep chirping at me, and I keep telling them "Well come on then." :p

And here's my little assist that was so pitiful last night...

Isn't she pretty. ^.^

I need advice. Asapp. I have 2 piped one with no movement and one that piped at 2 om yesterday <--- been 15 hours now and no progress. Then another piped an egg moving been almost 12 and not gone any farther. Amd one doing great. Went from all chirping to just tje last one. What do i do?

I'm no expert... but I would say try to help if they won't chirp... but it may be to late... but if they are chirping give them time... I assisted my one little egg yesterday, and she had pipped 24 hours before, and had shrink wrapped... As long as you have your humidity up where it should be, and they can chirp, they should be ok. make sure you read the post about HOW to assist before you try, and be patient... I took over three hours to get my little one out, and then after that it was only MOSTLY out, and I put it in the bator for another hour or so to 'finish up'
