4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

Hello everyone. I have been barely at home the last few days and had given up on my eggs. But this morning when I opened the incubator to candle/test and see if there was hope I had another pip, and a cheeping egg. So I guess my hatch is not over yet after all. 800 posts.. don't think i'm going to catch up, I cant even find ron's digests, ahahahah!

I'm still waiting on egg #13. It's day 23. I candled earlier this morning to see if there was an internal pip in the air cell, but its a BCM so the shell is too dark ... although I was sure I had seen the air cell in this one prior to setting. Perhaps baby is pipped and has filled the void? Tapped and heard nothing, but I swear I see it moving ever so slightly, almost not visibly, but it could just be wishful thinking. This is the hard part, eh. Do I leave it alone or do I ... intervene in some way? Out of 9 Maran eggs set, only 3 came 'on time' and the rest arrived on day 22/23. What would you do?

PS The 'crack' across the bottom is just hatch effluent. This poor egg has been rolled from one end of the incubator to another over the past 3 days. Poor thing probably has vertigo.
Hard one... I think iwpold wait til the end of day 23. or mornin g of 24 if some still hatched today day 23 ..and then slowly pick a little shell off the big end of the egg...NIOT the membrane just shell a small piece see if you see movement at all
If not pick a bit more off and look again .Use a flashslight maybe it couldl get it to move if it is alive If you see any blood put a wet paper towel piece on the chip and back in .If not continue ,Once open enough for a fingertip... touch it. It should move then if alive...GOOD LUCK!.

someone also answered this, but I'll say....
I'm hatching these for someone who breeds them...
I wanted some additional eggs... for the NYD hatch a long...
and she was able to get me some of these, and some Polish (Tolbunt) if I'd hatch some of her Lav Marans...
which of COURSE I'm happy to do...
she said the Orps were lazy hatchers... but this time the Marans are!!! ugh...
anyway, of the 9 orpington eggs, one was a clear, so 8 went into lock down, and so far 6 of those hatched... one is cold so died... but the other one... well, I'm not done waiting yet. :)

That is totally my question!
The Roo was BlueCM in a pen w/ Black &Blue Orps & Ameraucan (& BCM but the egg wasn't one of the darks so not MaranxMaran)
I got to see the birds when I picked up the eggs, they were all very good looking pure breeds. (Really hoping L the Maran x Maran makes it can't wait to see that one too!)

I don't really know all the correct color names but in person it is a like actual metalic silver, I haven't washed it yet so some of the shiny & glued down will clean off I imagine,
but the main color is just amazing! There are some strands of a light golden blonde just on the tips of the wings. If these colors hold this is gonna be one
I got a blue chick and sort of a creamy grey coloured chick - both Ameraucana crossed with ?? Pretty sure one is from a Brahma hen, possible that both are.

Sounds sensible to me ... and pretty much what I was thinking I'd do. I'm still hopeful it will come on it's own. I left the last hatchling in there to peep at it, but it's almost dry so I make take it out and that way I can hear better if this egg peeps. Not sure though. Regardless, I need to stop staring at it ... a watched peep never pips! ... and I think I'm intimidating it! LOL

My Egg L is the same, I set on time, & first peep was last night, it piped about 16 hrs later aprox. 8am, then nothing until just now I can see it has broken the bottom of the membrane where it piped and ever so slightly it moves outward like its a hinged at the top flap door, but nothing else so far, still after all the mellow drama w/ the ones I had to pip & assist I'm giving this one more time to zip, its a risk since none of the other could have ever piped, let alone zip, but since this one piped I'm giving it a chance at natural hatch. Good Luck w/ yours!!

As it dries and rubs itself more fluffy I think I'm starting to see some extra facial fuzziness so I'm starting to think mine is Maran x Ameraucana (rather than Orp hen) .
I'll thrilled either way, but its pretty fun trying to guess.

I have good news to report!!

1) I am officially done with the NYD hatch !!
2) All 4 of the chicks that were still in the bator as of my last post have made it! I put the one with the stringy umbilical stuff in the brooder before I left because it had dried up nicely. My mystery chick still has a big belly but she's strong and does well in the little box I made for her. The two black and white chicks are out and strong and drying off.

I did bring my bator to work with me... I'll post pics when my iPad charges up!
