4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

A wet paper towel, or cloth. Gently hold the wet against it, then go behind the poo, and work the poo off. Just pull gently. It comes off petty easy.

Agreed. Its all about getting it wet enough to soften up , w/ the wet getting down between the yuck and the skin then it will come appart.
Also, use 100-95 F temp water - it might take a couple mins. of dabbing w/ the wet paper towel and you don't want to chill (or burn) the chick.

Before everyone wanders away, I wanted to remind folks that I was hoping we could all stay in touch for a follow up when these NYD Hatchers lay their first eggs!

It would be so very interesting to know esp. which breeds start laying when , a great chance for us all to compare notes on # weeks until first egg, and how the pullet eggs are overall in those first few wks of laying. Anyone like that idea?
I'm pretty sure they will close this thread soon, so do we need someone to set up a new thread "NYDH2013egglayingfollowup" or some such?

When does all the finalizing happen? Just so I know to not pest again until then

Hello everyone! DH found a couple of copies of A Memory of Light ( Robert Jordans last Wheel Of Time book) put out early, so we have spent the last day reading. 900 pages, finished about an hour ago. SO I'm late posting! But I started that series in.. 1989?? I think? and have been not so patiently waiting for an end, so I think its safe to say it was a prior engagement! ( I even once offered to edit for him, Harriet laughed and laughed at that one!)
A little off topic... but, I didn't do the NYE hatch, (as I was going to be away the majority of the time!) But I did put some eggs in on NYD instead! =D So I have a bunch of random chicken eggs (mix of what ever my other half's mum has!) and a bunch of quail eggs as well ^_^ never hatched quail before.. I'm not even sure if they will hatch? they are so light it's hard to tell if anything is even in there!
Coturnix quail are easy to hatch. check at about 6-10 days to see if they look dark, on unfertilized ones you will see light at the top of the egg, in the others it will be dark. If you are uncertain just leave them in I have never had a quail egg go bad or explode, they hatch nice and quick so they are fairly safe.
I filled one out for chiqita. Do I need to fill this one out too?

Same form. I see you there. curse you eggs we wanted roosters from!
Am I missing something?
I'm curious to know who won the poultry photo contest, has it been announced and i didn't catch it? it ended three days ago :)
I'M not sure if MMC's thread has a winner yet, if it is the other one, email the thread starter and ask, I ALWAYS get her name wrong. I'm a hamfisted typer, i am!
A couple of my chicks have chicken poo stuck to their butts. Any suggestions on best way to clean without ripping off their fluff?
Watch out if they stay this way, pasty-butt is dangerous in chicks. If they get it feed electrolytes and yogurt. It is the thing I loose the most chicks too.

I have a showgirl who decided to go broody this week. I'm going to sneak her inside and see if she will take my NYD chicks to raise for me. This buttercup is SOOO loud clearly she wants a momma!
