4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

THANK YOU!!
delisha~ I just gave the chick starter bucket a good stir. I didnt see bubbling but it looks like a malt beer on top and sure smells like one too!! so its about 24 hrs now.... should it bubble? it has tiny bubbles around the outside, sorta foam like?
sounds like it is starting!! You can start to feed even if it is not ready, just remember to add dry and water to your base every time you feed.

Quote: YAY!!! Thank you TONS AND TONS!! so excited!! I already got a 55 gal drum to use for the biguns!!! but I need more ACV now!!
I wonder how much ACV for a 55 gal drum!!

I wonder if I can add rasins to the feed for the big birds? Or would that mess up the process? same thing with Molasas and stuff!

I would think you could add what ever you wanted.
For a 55 gallon drum remember you have to stir it, so don't fill it too full of dry feed.
I would add a cup of UPACV to 1/4 container of dry feed in that 55 gallon container. By the time you add water you will be half full.

I tell people who are just starting..... to start with just the mash until they get the hang of it.
Give yourself a week of feeding and replacing till you have it going well.

Than add stuff like wheat, raisins, garlic, what ever. Worried about worms toss in pumpkin seeds, need extra fat, toss in BOSS, birds need a little boost toss in Oregano. Etc..

Hello fellow chickenholics. I have a first for me. Chicks pecking rear of other chicks till bleeds . How do you make them stop?! I have removed 2 of them already.

Once they get a spot to work, they go after something awful, especially if there is blood. I've had good luck with Blu Kote spray. Make the whole bum purple, no red spot to go after and they tend to leave it alone. Warning, that stuff really stains, wear gloves.

And cover the entire area you will be working on the chick in with an old towel, blanket or newspapers. Also, wear old clothes. We won't even go into the number of times I've had purple "chicken pox" from being flipped with blu-kote by a struggling bird.

Check everyone else who was in the cage with her. Looks like she may have been fighting. Wash her up as best you can & see if you can find any injuries other than the chipped beak. Blu-kote or neosporin any injuries you find that aren't on or near her beak & eyes. Neosporin can be used on her face, but not the blu-kote. I would isolate her from the others & maybe add a bit of Duramycin-10 to her water for a few days if you have any. Dosage would be about 1/4 tsp per quart of water & mix it fresh every 24 hours. You can use other chicken antibiotics if you have them on hand. Just mix them according to package directions. Not sure how well quail like yogurt, but maybe try offering her some just to get something in her. Water & liquids will be more important than food at this point. Add a little bit of vitamins & electrolytes to her water, or a small amount of brown sugar, or even Gatorade, a sports drink or Pedialyte will work as long as it isn't real bright or dark colored. Don't give it full strength. Add it to water about 1 part to 3 parts water (1/4 cup electrolyte drink to 3/4 cup water). You can add the antibiotics right in with the electrolytes.
