4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

So who won 3rd in the worst hatch rate?

I have two things going on right now that are confusing me. One is I have a roo that refuses to stand up and even though he's on the skittish side he no longer cares if you pick him up. He's not sick, but one of his legs are messed up from when his 4 brothers were in the coop with him last year. He can walk just fine, but he's acting strangely. I can pick him up with no problem and he refuses to get on the roosts at night. One of the hens has been bullying him and I'm starting to think he's depressed.

Second is I have two game chickens with weird looking legs. I'll try to see if I can get a pic up tomorrow, but tonight is out of the question. It kinda looks like they have a buildup of some kind on their legs, but not on their feet. Whatever it is it isn't contagious. I tried putting Tally in the cage with them and the roo jumped all over her trying to mount her. Tally's legs are fine and that's been over a month ago that I did that. I'm starting to think that maybe it could have something to do with the breed they're crossed with (which I have never heard of before), which is Hatch game.

Any advice on either of these?

Canned dog food, or kibble? I'm curious - are their additional benefits to feeding fermented feed?
Dry chunk dog food. It kinda dissolves in the fermentation bucket & mixes all through the feed. I have caught my chickens & ducks both stealing dog & cat food both so obviously it doesn't hurt them & they like it. Adds extra protein.

Pix would help & I'm thinking scaly leg mites are a possibility. Some breeds are way more susceptible to them.

I've thought that for months now, but it doesn't go away. I got rid of them in just a few days on Freddie after she showed up here and I realized she had something going on. I used Pam to get rid of them. I've sprayed the two games so many times it doesn't bother them with no change. I was told that they were crossed with Bumblefoot, but that's a condition not a breed.

Yes, bumblefoot is NOT a breed of chicken. It's a sore on the foot. Post some pix when you get a chance & maybe someone will be able to tell you if it's normal for your birds or if it's something to be concerned about.

The only purchase I made was the Ecoglow, everything else was in my basement.

I'm such a horrible procrastinator. I just finally cleaned out the incubators. Something tells me that they aren't going to get much of a break though because I have quite a few sets of eggs lined up.

There was one time that I left them dirty for a full year! Of course, that was before I became a hatch-a-holic, hahaha. Anyone else still have dirty incubators from the hatch-a-long?

CAN I Ferment my dogs food????
I'm hesitant though because the dog or cat food have a lot of meat products in there, and I dunno if they act the same way in fermentation (preservative?)

Lovely chicks, but I had to laugh when I first saw the photo ... they look like conjoined twins as the photo only shows 2 feet!
LOL, I hadn't noticed that! That's funny!

That's very cool and very nice looking!

I read a korean article once that they asked the over 100 year old folks what they did to live so long all answered that they ate daengjang daily. That's fermented soybean paste. So fermented foods gotta be good.
Is Tofu also fermented bean curd? Hubby feeds that to us alot

I left mine dirty the first time. Now I'm a lazy person, but getting ready for the second batch weeks later cured me! LOL I can't believe myself but I cleaned it all up, air dried it, then packed it up and put it away! I can't tell you how impressed I am with myself!

Now if only I would finish the darn coop! Ugh, I want it finished NOW, but I'm just cutting out doors and installing nest boxes and still have the roof to do (no plywood up there yet let alone roofing!!! Ugh, must finish this thing pronto!

Nope Have fresh batch of serama in it!!

No tofu is processed differently but still nutricious and delicious. Daengjang is basically the left over stuff from making soy sauce that's fermented. Koreans really used everything...nothing went to waste.
