4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

If you can keep them inside you could use a storage container (minus the lid) with a short piece of wood over half and some hard ware cloth over the entire top. For a light you could use a clip on fixture on the top, or a hole cut in the side just under the lip if it isn't big enough to clip on. This is pretty much what I use to brood my chicks in. There's also a lot of other options here on BYC.

If the way I worded it is confusing, I can always try to post of few pics of my brooder.

Haha! No I think I can picture it. You are talking about the large rubbermaid storage containers, yes? That would work for the first few weeks, but they will eventually outgrow the container. At that point I would have to have a place fixed up outside for them. And here, in the middle of winter, that could be a problem. Early winter is pretty mild here, but we start getting our snowstorms in late January. And generally, our backyard is buried. There is a second floor porch I could fix up for them but it would be a lot of work, since right now we use it for storage. An old TV, some metal dining chairs, bed frames, that sort of stuff. I'll be trying to figure it out before the sign in closes, that's for sure. Thank you for the idea, though!

You're welcome! It's temporary for me. I have 3 roos that I'm trying to sell to make room for more chickens. One of them I really would hate to see go because he's so sweet and loves attention, while the roo in my RIR pen is evil as can be. If the sweet roo were pure RIR I would have no problem sending Red to the freezer, but he's crossed with my Black Australorp hen. My dad has it in his head that if he doesn't sell we'll be building a coop for him and giving him some hens. The problem with that is that the next thing we build is going to be a grow out pen for birds bound for the freezer. I don't suppose there would a problem with that since he's so unique.

Well I may not make the hatch along. ;-( dog attack this afternoon there's only 2 BO pullets and their roo left from that pen and I don't know if they will make it through the night.....

I'm so sorry, I would be devistated if I lost my birds that way. Our dogs would eat our chickens at any chance they get, so we had to dog proof our coops from the start.

Thank you everyone. Not the first time but this time they went throug 6' chicken wire and 2 strands of electric. Weak spot was the gate; it's just a bit shorter than the fence and i think thats how they got in. Out working on it now, just taking a breakfast break. an update the three injured chickens and two out of three injured ducks made it through the night. they are not out of the woods yet but a couple have drank some water and the roo even ate a little bit.

Quote: I'm running a light right now, so I can get some orders filled, mine all ( I mean all) stopped laying after the effects of the Nor'easter and Sandy. Everyone molted in late Aug and early Sept. I turn it on an hour before sunrise and an 2 hours after sunset. That one doesn't seem to have an affect, they are roosting when I come in sleeping. I will slowly decrease the amount of light after I collect the 2 orders.
