4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

Also, people without their own eggs can call around to the people who advertise on Craig's List and see if they have a rooster ;) Or call your local ranch supply/feed stores and see if they know anyone with fertile eggs. Lots of ways to get eggs for this hatch-a-long!

It is really cold for chicks. I normally neveer have chicken in the house. For this special event I am making part of the basement a brooder for a few months. It is not going to be fun when they are about 6-8 weeks old. I hope by than I will have a new area done in coop that can keep them warm. I am insulating a special area for chicks. I am more worried about lack of sunlight in the basement and no exposure to the ground. Guess time will tell how this works out. I will have to make sure to bring in soil, dirt, etc.

can you tell me why the dirt is important?  I've never heard that comment before.  We raise the chick in old leaky water troughs in the garage.  There is some sun light from the window in the door, but no soil.

I'm guessing it's to boost their immune system, but I've brooded chicks in my basement before with no dirt and they grew up perfectly healthy.

Just signed up but not sure what I'll hatch as my girls are either rooster-less, not laying or not laying yet or early pullet...will find something!!

If you have a Trader Joes, Whole Foods, or other organic local grocery store, you can get ahold of fertile eggs from there for like, 3 bucks. I'm hatching some myself. It's hilarious and zany to do.

I can't find the contest list for this hatch. Can someone please help me locate it

Anyone know if the organic eggs at wegmans are fertile? I don't think there is a trader joe's or a whole foods around here.

All 'cage free' or 'free range' eggs have a chance at being fertile. There's always an oopsie roo wandering around in the pen, and refrigeration doesn't really heavily impact viability of the egg. Packages that actually advertise "Fertile Eggs" have the highest chance though. Look for the freshest carton, let them warm up on your counter for 12 hours, and away you go!

I can ship 6+ Super Blue Egg Layers (Lavender Ameraucana Roo x white Leghorns) for the NYD - $17 for 6+ eggs, includes shipping. They are pullet eggs, but I have confirmed fertility. PM me if interested.
