I have a Hovabator too, and it works really well other than the last 3 days. Holds humidity perfectly.

The older one I borrowed keeps temperatures better than the Genesis 1588

I have two hovabators, one has the turner, when they go to lockdown I place them in the non turner incubator that is at the same temperature as the 1st.  Seems to work great the last two hatches.

I have a Genesis 1588 with turners. I've never had any trouble with it loosing temp. The last time I hatched out chicks I had a 90%+ hatch rate. My biggest issued it maintaining the humidity. I have a hard time getting it to stay around 50% it normally goes way higher than I want it and I only fill up one of the water troughs. I need to invest in a better hygrometer because the two I have always read a different number.

I guess I'm ok with her staying home. She's more valuable to me as a breeder than to risk losing her from stress or illness.

You can still try the white vinegar to return her to her normal color. She may not make it to the show, but maybe she wouldn't be getting clucked about behind her back.

When receiving shipped eggs during winter (or colder months) we do the following:

• unpack as soon as we pick them up
• place in a holding flat pointy end down
• allow to warm to room temperature - pre heat the bator during this time
• once at room temp place in incubator with the turner OFF for 24 hours
• after 24 hours in the bator with the turner off it is flipped on.
• DONT FORGET if you use a hatcher to pre heat it by day 15 for chickens (day 20 for ducks) (day 25 for geese) so its ready

If any eggs have a wonky air cell they are left not being turned and propped at a 45* angle. We hand turn these 3-5 times a day until the air cell stabilizes.


We have additional steps taken for waterfowl eggs since they have other requirement. Our hatch rates run 98-99% for our own eggs and 89-92% on shipped eggs.

I just ordered my incubator from e-bay!!! I'm waiting my very first hatch under two broody hens right now. Some are due Monday. Everyone should be out by Friday, but my broody's will be busy raising chicks, so I had to get myself an incubator so I could take part in the hatch-along... I'm so excited!! Can't wait for my eggs to arrive!!

When should we order the eggs to come? Like a day or two before the date to set em or on the same day?

Being that the hatch date is a Tuesday, you will need them by Saturday or no later than Monday.Quote:

What a night up till 2:30 with kidney pain wanting to cut the cancer out myself. Then get woke up by DW and told the water is frozen come to find out at 7:00 the pump is dead. Come in the house to find the incubator unplugged and down to 67 degrees. Don't know what I'm going to do for water.

Scott is this what you are feeling like. Chin up it will get better. DON'T STRESS. You need all you energy for your surgery. Call a plumber and let him do the worrying .

I may change my mind, but haven't managed to find any local eggs that I want - too hard to get shipped eggs right now, as I work every day and hate to think they'd be sitting in the mailbox or on the porch in the snow.. If you still want to, all you have to do is have the shipper put "call for pick up" with your number and you call them to let them know you have a package coming and you want them to call you.

What date do I set duck eggs and what date for chicken eggs for this hatch along???

I think I found Duck eggs, still searching for chicken, wondering if I can set my pullet eggs as they are tiny yet? they are mutts as they are all under a SLW Roo

I will be setting eggs from my two oldest Serama pullets and their boyfriends! I'm not sure of the exact number yet...that will depend on the girls, but I'm in!!
