4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch / December online hatching egg swap

Gabrielle uses marbles in her water dish to keep the baby quail from drowning. I stuff my bowl with toilet paper or kleenex & fill it just to the level of the paper. This lets the babies walk right across the top & not drown. A lot of people crush their food up for the quail but I never have & mine do fine. The ones I sent you tamryn are coturnix, mixed colors in same pen with regular & jumbo males over regular females. I just hatched out a few yesterday & have more cooking, so I know they are fertile.

My preference is the little water bottles for small animals (rabbits, hamsters, etc). I watch them like a hawk for the first few days to make sure that everybody is drinking, but they do fairly well with it. Even my ducklings seem to be doing well with them. When they start out, they'll peck it like they're trying to kill it, but as they "get it" a little more, they'll stick their beak into the tube and drink that way... Much more suave than pecking it to death.

I use the water bottles in several of my breeder pens. Some of the birds get it right away & some get a bit thirsty before they are smart enough to copy the other birds, but once they figure it out they are fine. I haven't tried the bottles with my babies yet. Maybe I'll do that once I get my big brooder & the new brooders set up after I finish moving.

ALL 6 quail hatched!! Amazing!! They are too cute. I was nervous last night when I went to bed, I thought maybe... I had 4 pips but those eggs are soooo small.. When I got up this morning I heard them all peeping in the incubator. Here they are in the brooder!

YAY!!! Yours hatched better than mine did & mine weren't shipped. They were from the same pens I sent yours out of. Out of 6 I had 1 clear, 2 hatched & 3 died in shell. I had a lot of temp fluctuations though. Lost all of my scovies but 1 & none of the chickens hatched from that bator either. Opps, I still have 1 chick trying to hatch. It was due 2 days ago but was delayed by temps dropping in my bators. I have another 24 quail in staggered to hatch 1/1 thru 1/11. Hopefully they will fare better. Pulled a bunch of NTD eggs tonight. Apparently 1 of my shipments got too cold, no development at all, & the other was affected by temp fluctuations, dead babies. I'm down to less than 50% of my NYD eggs left already.

Oh no.. I ordered some buff laced sebrights and out of the 17 eggs only one with growth when I candled yesterday and they live in the same state as I do! I recently upgraded to a GQF digital sportsman, it was hard to spend that kind of money but it has really been paying itself off with amazing hatch rates. I am in love with this incubator!! I am rooting for you and your hatches!
I almost killed a quail last night, I had marbles in the water dish, apparently not enough of them and walked in to one in the dish upside down, I dried him off and set him under the heat ... It looked bad, I walked away and went back in 30 minutes later thinking I would need to remove his body and sure enough he was in the food dish eating and then running around! resiliant little suckers aren't they!
I have the 2 OEGB in lockdown, they should hatch tomorrow! I will post pictures if everything goes well with them.
