OK, the 4th grader is my daughter, so there's some bragging here.
I will say she learned a tremendous amount about local government, politics, and how to get things done in the city (as did her parents).
The short story is that our town did not allow any backyard chickens (neighboring towns do). My daughter, admittedly with help from her parents, looked up the ordinance, proposed a change to allow four hens (no roosters), circulated a petition, and met with several city officials to find out how to make the change. After several months, the change was approved by city council.

Interestingly, a local realtor/blogger picked up the story too...

She's going to enter a table-top display at our county fair (she had to make one for the school project), so we'll get a few more people educated along the way.
