4th of July hatch along!

Setting about 2 dozen eggs June 11th - expected hatch date July 2, why so early? So they will be photo ready on the Fourth of July! These 7 chicks hatched out June 5th. Apparently most of them are camera shy! 3 "Black Star" hens, 1 "Black Star" Roo and 3 Rhode Island Reds 2 hens and a roo.

I have some welsh Harlequin Duck eggs due to hatch the 4 or 5 of July. I just set them in the incubator yesterday. There are 8 hopefully I get a few females .

Welsh Harlequin ducks are beautiful birds. I have not tried hatching duck eggs yet although I do have a pond that attracts wild ducks. Do you have a problem with your ducks flying away - do you clip their wings, or do they hang around because there is food? My birds free-range all day every day, lay their eggs in their nesting boxes and put themselves up in the coop at night. They are so well behaved it's amazing. I almost have them trained to shut the barn door behind them. Happy hatching and my our Lord bless you with 7 girls and 1 boy.

I'm HATCHING some lavender Orpington and fell eggs and expected hatch date is June 29!

Do you have a problem with your ducks flying away - do you clip their wings, or do they hang around because there is food? Most domestic ducks don’t fly. Welsh Harlequin are in that area. They can usually get enough flight to get 3-4 feet off the ground and about 5-6 feet before they hit the ground. But ducks like Calls, Black East Indies, or Australian Spotted ducks can fly because they ar light enough and their wings are sized right for true flight. Those duckies I would clip wings on to keep them close.

Lavender Orpington awsome! Last march I purchased three Buff Orpington, two hens and a rooster they are 13 weeks old now so it will be a while before I hatch out some Buff Orpingtons. I'm sorry I don't know what "Fell Eggs" are. Perhaps you can educate me. My most recent hatch, 5 days ago, produced 4 "Black Star" and 3 "Rhode Island Red" chicks. Tomorrow I'm setting 20 eggs - a combination of Rhode Island Red, Black Star and Plymouth Barred Rock. The eggs are from my own flock. The expected hatch date is July 2nd. Good luck on your hatch. I would be interested in knowing where you got your eggs. Do you show your birds?

I am wondering if climate may play a role in keeping ducks. It seems to me ducks perfer a cooler climate such as you have. There are a few ducks around but chickens and turkeys are more abundant in our area.

I think that depends on the ducks. When I had mine last year they tried to swim in the snow. But they likewise were always out sunning themselves. I think ducks are pretty adaptable to both hot and cold. If they have access to water and shade they can make due with a lot of temps.

I don't show my birds, I'm not in town enough for that. And the whole "fell" eggs thing is an autocorrect accident that i didnt notice. I meant CCLB eggs, and I got them both from ebay, but the legbar eggs are from greenfire farms stock. Which is exciting!

I am at it again already, but no
Silkies this time! Just stuck 1 Lavender orp, 1 Ameraucana/Maran, 4?? Eggs in this morning. We’ll see if they are fertilized in a few days, I guess.

I also picked up 12 Serama eggs today. Those will go in tonight.

Next week I will receive the eggs I bought from a byc’er. A mixed dozen of silver double laced barnvelder, black/blue/splash Isbar, and Pyncheon eggs.

The first batch of eggs will hatch around the July 2nd/3rd.
