5 dead in an hour

Our chickens are all now in the basement! I posted a photo of their area a few posts up! They wont be returned outside until its in the 80s

Glad to read that you are getting things under wraps there and it sounds like it was the heat. That is so wild as we are having the same heat issues here. My birds are all in the shade until about 3:00 though and then they only have partial sun until about 6:00. I suppose that helps.

Anyhow, lots of luck with the heat and chickens! It's going to be a hot one today too.

Mom,

I have been thinking about you all day and am concerned about the camper. Is it at all comfortable inside as far as the heat goes. I have camped before and it was horrible without AC. Before you put everyone together I would really try and check it out to make sure it isn't like "jiffy pop". I don't remember if you have a vent in the roof, but if not, you really need one so that the heat can rise and escape. Good luck and keep those girls safe.
Air flow is a must even in the Winter. BTY the camper as a coop is darling !!!!!

I am so sorry for your loss - an idea for using fans is to place a pan of ice in front of a fan so that the air is cooled as it is being circulated.

We live in northern Nevada where temps can get above 100 degrees in the summer but we have really low humidity &, while it is hot, it is more tolerable than the high temps with humidity. I remember as a kid growing up in Louisiana trying to lay in the sun on a lounge chair in the backyard on the grass & not being able to tolerate it because of the moist heat coming up from the ground. It was just too hot and hard to breathe. You said the chicks and hen you lost were on the grass, I believe.

I am glad that you have a place to put your other chickens until the heat passes.

I feel bad for you children, too, especially the one that helps you with the chickens.
