I have 3 female and 2 male ducks. 2 males are khaki campbells and the three females consist of 2 pekins and one khaki.
This pekin recently started laying. Yesterday, I could hear a croaking sound when she was panting and her quack was deeper than the day before. She was not interested in the males trying to mate with her and would stay close to the raft, but lay down and shut her eyes after she got a few good nibbles of grass in. She was swimming, eating, and drinking just fine. No other ducks (yesterday or this morning) are showing any signs.
People suggested heat exhaustion, so I gave her pedialyte and brought her inside for the night. My only male pekin is an indoor duck because his legs are splayed and was hurting his feet outside. Long story short, her quack still sounds hoarse, but she isn't panting. My male and female were doing the mating head bob to each other through the baby gate I set up.
The male khakis were chasing her around and biting her trying to mate, so I think that coupled with the high 90 degree weather would be the issue. I am merely guessing though.
She has no other signs of any illness. Her eyes are bright, feathers clean and beautiful. She has been perfectly fine since... just the croaky voice.
I ordered some ACV and deworming stuff online, but I don't want to overwhelm her with stuff in her system.
Any ideas of what could be going on?
